Murwillumbah Amateur Cycle Club Handicap

Tyalgum, NSW, September 1, 2001

By Phil Ruge

Just 35 riders lined up to contest the monthly handicap race conducted by the Murwillumbah Amateur Cycle Club on Saturday 1 September 2001.

This month’s race was over the full Tyalgum course which is 60 kilometres long and takes riders out to Chillingham and then across to Tyalgum before returning to Dulguigan via Bray Park and Boat Harbour. Whilst there are several long and steep climbs to be overcome in the middle section of the course it is usually the last 10 kilometres of the race with its combination of undulating roads and flat lands that witness the winning moves in these events.

The riders were divided into 5 groups with 3 riders at limit, 10 riders off at 11 minutes, 11 riders at 19 minutes, 6 riders at 22 minutes and the remaining 5 riders starting at 27 minutes behind the limit group.

Under threatening skies and a few spots of rain the first three groups rode well to still be apart on the course by the time the half way mark was reached at Tyalgum. However, a cooperative effort by the 19 minute bunch saw them start to pick up some of the slower riders from this point. This steady progression continued through Bray Park with all of the first three groups coming back together just after Boat Harbour with the chopping block and scratch bunches not far behind at this point.

The attacks started in earnest amongst the front group in an effort to sort out the race and to keep the chasing riders at bay. Unfortunately one of these riders launched a stinging attack down the wrong side of the road! This was duly noted by the race referee who subsequently and correctly awarded a penalty for dangerous riding. This is a timely reminder for all riders to both know and abide by all of the rules of racing for the safety of everyone.

Despite this misdemeanour these tactics were successful as the combined first three groups still had a lead of some 200 metres on the faster riders at the finish line. First home was Wilf Hubac with Peter Kidd in second place (both from the 19 minute bunch), the ever consistent Frank Schirmer third (11 minute group), Stuart Chambers fourth (19 minutes) and the ‘quiet gentleman’ Jim Collins (11 minutes) in fifth spot. Fastest time was taken out by Robert Lyte whilst another solid performance by Sandra Bury saw her as the first woman to finish this challenging race.

The monthly Point Score results for last month were Frank Schirmer first with 41 points, Graham Harvey second on 39 points, Lindsay Smith third with 37 points, Stuart Chambers fourth on 36 points and Happy fifth with 34 points.

Racing next week will be the Club Championships over the Bald Mountain course. This is for all club members and will be contested over 4 grades with separate races for women and junior riders. Start time is 2.00 pm from Dulguigan and all club members are strongly encouraged to compete in this year’s championships. See you there!

Randwick Botany Cycling Club

Heffron Park, NSW, September 1, 2001

By Tony Horneman

Four Randwick Botany Cycling Club teams joined a record 98 teams in the NSW 4-Man Teams Time Trial Championships at Calga on Sunday 2 September 2001. Best placed was the Under-17 team comprising Chris Jenkins, Rob Cater, Luke Cridland and Keegan Aitchison. The team won bronze in the 27km event in a time of 42 minutes 31 seconds. The two Randwick Botany Men's teams finished out of the placings. The Masters (over 35 years) team finished 11th out of a field of 26.

In club racing held on Saturday 1 September 2001 at Heffron Park, 15-year-old triathlete Samantha Guille rode strongly in her first senior D grade race over 16km. Samantha recently competed in the Canberra Junior Tour, where she was placed third in the 8km Time Trial. Samantha said she hopes to develop her cycling and tri-athlon skills in time for Australia team selection at the Athens or Beijing Olympic Games. Final placings in the D Grade event was Peter Craig - first in a time of 29 minutes 29 seconds, second was John Lynch followed by Allan Sumner. Andrew Pike finished just out of the placings.

Newcomer Nicholas Armstrong worked hard in the combined B/C Grade event over 24km. The 15-rider bunch averaged over 36kmh in wet and slippery conditions which tested rider skills around the tight Heffron Park circuit. B-Grader Aaron Castles led out in the closing laps to lift the pace for the final sprint to the line. Jaysen Brenton crossed first in a time of 40 minutes 6 seconds, followed by speed ice-skater Matthew Lucas and Brendan Dunn. Craig Dempsey finished in fourth place.

15 Junior riders participated in 4 events in rain. The 2km Time Trial was won by Michael Murdoch in a time of 3 minutes 37 second. Chris Young's time was 3 minutes 42 seconds and Mark Woodhouse 3 minutes 45 seconds. The A Grade 14km scratch race was won by David Jenkins-Flint, followed by Chris Young and Thomas Murdoch. The B Grade 10km event was won by Belinda Guille, with Mark Woodhouse second and Andrew Young third. C Grade 6km race was won by Adriano Maradini followed by Raphael Rosse, Nicholas Mellick and Antoine Rosse, fourth.

Randwick Botany Cycling Club conducts club racing every Saturday at Heffron Park, Maroubra NSW. Juniors start at 1.30pm and Seniors 2.30pm. For more information please contact the club secretary Helen Vella on 02 9667 3307.

Balance Clothing Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club Road Championships

Modella, Victoria, September 1, 2001

By Malcolm Sawford

A miserable Melbourne winter's day for this year's running of the Club Road Championships. Cold and wet, and with no sign of improvement, only the really fit, the confident and the super enthusiastic fronted for the testing hilly Modella circuit.

Kristjan Snorrason, the 2 time defending Elite Champion, had made no secret of his desire to win his 3rd title in succession in a recent diary update (www.snozza.com). In the early part of the race, however, he was content to bide his time in the bunch and let other riders show their hands.

An early escape by Danny Weatherley ended in disaster, as his back wheel entered the wet and slippery Heads Road corner before the front wheel! He did remount and complete the race, but was unable to rejoin the peloton.

A brisk tempo up the first climb by mountain bike star Tim Retchford saw the bunch substantially reduced, swallowing up and spitting out another early rabbit in Ryan Kelly. What remained of the bunch worked steady turns in the increasingly heavy drizzle, allowing an attack by Matt Chessum to go unchallenged.

Chessum would ride alone for 20km to the base of the climb on the second lap. Also trying to get a head start on the pack through the hills was Kelly, who had rejoined after a long chase. By the summit of the climb, the leading pack had regrouped.

The nasty short but extremely steep climb that follows strung the bunch out, but was not enough to cause a split. On the false flat before the Costers Road turnoff, Snorrason launched a fearsome attack, and quickly opened a sizeable advantage. The others seemed content to ride for second place, and Snozza extended his advantage over the final 10km, to claim his hat-trick.

The bunch sprint for second went to the Veteran Geoff Whiter, who had elected to compete in the Elite event, ahead of promising sprinter Matt Dowling and Under 17 track star Shane Perkins, who had also chosen to compete in the premier event.

The small Masters field raced a tactical first lap, with Rob Licciardo content to hammer away on the front for mile after mile, and the rest happy to sit on. Through the hills on the second lap, 5 riders rode clear of their tiring companions and fought out the medals.

In a tight sprint, Harry Hendon would cross the line first, but in doing so inadvertently shut the door on Sydney Paralympic Gold Medallist Peter Homann, who was closing quickly. The places were reversed by the Judges, with third and fourth going to Licciardo and Mick Buckley. Marty Keane was the unlucky unplaced rider from the break. Homann leaves for Zurich this week to join the Australian team competing in the International Paralympic Committee European Championships.

In a very disappointing turnout by the Club's large Women membership, Deb McCoy was the only lady to front the start line. A new rider to the sport, Deb has been one of the strongest women in the state in the past few months and deserved some competition on the day.

The Junior Under 17 race was won by the promising Chelsea rider Nathan Wise. Rob Doyle was first Club rider home after1 lap pf the hilly course, and claimed the Club Title ahead of Chris Tassell and Aaron Moody.

The Juniors from Under 11 through to Under 15 rode a 30km out and back flat course to Bunyip. Another Chelsea rider took line honours, with the Club Title going to Alex Smyth ahead of Mitch Peart and Danny Clarke.

In the special race held for riders without the fitness or experience to compete in the Elite category, Rob Aughey, a Canberra-based member who works for the Australian Institute of Sport, showed the others a clean pair of wheels, and was the only participant to complete the 2 lap course.

Caesar's Illawarra Cycle Club Hillclimb

Mt Keira, NSW, September 1, 2001

By Garry Doughty

Just when Club officials were beginning to think that the weather had turned against them their luck changed and the rain held off for the running of the Club Hill Climb Championships on Saturday afternoon.

There are quite a few riders that don't particularly like time trials and give them a miss but there is also a select bunch of masochists who bother to participate in a time trial up Mt Keira. So with only sixteen of the hardy, or foolish depending on your view point, and two non club members the event was held with the rain threatening.

The fastest time recorded by a Club rider on the day was by Peter Jones in the under 23 division, an excellent time of 7.54.84. He showed how consistent a rider can be by being less than a second faster than the year before.

Last year's men's champion, Tim Morris, proved that it was no fluke by recording the fastest time again, 8.08.14 nine seconds faster than the year before. The Club road champion, Mal Haigh, who finished a mere .43 of a second behind him, pushed Morris all the way to the line.

Mal Moss continued on his winning way after his win in the C grade Club road championships the week before by taking out the Masters 1 division.

The biggest improver on the previous year's results was Dave Russel. He has put a lot of hard work in since his soccer induced broken leg last Christmas and was rewarded by winning the Masters 2 division in 8.44.70, an improvement of 55 seconds on the previous year.

Joe Pereira repeated last year's result by winning Masters 3 division in a time only 5 seconds slower than the year before.

Lionel Covington put in a blinder of a ride and recorded a time of 9.53.51 in winning Masters 5 division. His time was only bettered by two other Master's competitors, the first two place getters in Masters division 2.

A lot has been written over the years of the extraordinary riding achievements of Eric Doughty but it is almost unbelievable to see that he participated in what is arguably the toughest event of the year, let alone that he recorded a time of 12.13.28. Not bad for someone who is over eighty.

Other divisional winners were Josh Wall in under 17, a very creditable time of 7.57.81, and Bethany McCarthy in the women's.

Eurobodalla and Illawarra Academy rider Luke Dale recorded the fastest time on the day in 7.33.55. Dale came was within 3 seconds of the course record set by Scott Bradburn in 1998. Dale who is only a first year under 19 rider is one of the most promising juniors in the country and has a great future ahead of him.

The event was followed by a sausage sizzle and afternoon tea with a large Turpentine tree providing shelter from the drizzle.

Next weekend's race is a 41.5km handicap with marshal group 2 providing the marshals.
