Devonport teenager Simon Elliott celebrated his first full season in open cycling company with victory in the Exeter Wheelrace on Saturday .
Showing good form at club race level, Elliott took that promise into open company with a well timed performed in the 2000 m race - which included prominent Tasmanian scratchmen Gareth Atkins and Nathan Clarke.
Elliott - riding from a handicap of 180 m, made full use of his advantage and with some solid contributions from Ron Crawford (also 180 m) and Dane Leedham (160), along with Ryan Johnson, Ryan Sullivan and Michael Johnson, they gave the "backies" little chance to peg the gap.
Clarke produced a clear nomination for "Ride of the Season" with a blistering performance in his heat of the 1000 m Lightning Handicap.
Forced to concede 95 m start to the outmarkers, Clarke looked "gone for all money" in the home straight but somehow managed to find a window of opportunity when the "fronties" left the door open for him.
Full of confidence, Clarke produced an almost similar ride in the final to win from, Ryan Sullivan and veteran rider John Ablitt.
Clarke was however upstaged in the tough 40-lap A Grade Scratch when Devonport's Gareth Atkins pipped him on the line.
In junior racing, wheelrace winners included Matthew Goss (Under 17), Josh Myers (Under 15) and Daniel Jamieson (Under 13), who upstaged the highly fancied Alex Holden.
