Results and Reports for March 17-18, 2001Australia - MTBPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews MTBA National ChampionshipsCross-country Paul Rowney once again proved he is the master of Canberra singletrack, taking the MTBA title for the second year running. Rowney bided his time, letting Josh Flemming, Craig Gordon and Garth Hennesey make up the fast early running, before reeling them in,chewing them up and spitting them out one by one over the course of the race's five laps of the highly technical Blue Range course. Only Craig Gordon came close to troubling Rowney's trail to the championship, staying with Rowney until the fourth lap, at which point he succumbed to the reigning champion's relentless pace and consistency. The women's field was somewhat depleted of top talent by the ongoing division of mountain bike racing here into two series, one organised by the Australian Cycling Federation, the other by Mountain Bike Australia. The top four women from the ACF Nationals, Mary Grigson, Dellys Franke, Anna Baylis and Jaci Low, were all absent leaving the way clear for Wendy Walker to storm to lead from the gun and storm to first place. Special mention to John Hardwick for taking the Sport class race on a singlespeed. The rider formerly known as 'Big Ring' says he no longer has time to put in the training hours necessary to race Elite or Expert, but feels it's unfair to line up in Sport without a handicap. Downhill Jarod Graves set the fastest first-run time, but it was obvious as the second runs unfolded that some top riders had chosen to relax into the qualifying top 30 as Shane Wode in particular lopped a huge margin off his first run time, and sat in the leader's figurative hot seat for almost half an hour wondering if his time was going to be beaten. As it happened only two riders beat Wode's time, and spending last year overseas has clearly made a huge difference to John Waddell's skills, as the West Australian rider took the title for the first time. With Katrina Miller absent the women's downhill was a shoe-in for Tai-Lee Muxlow who was almost half a minute faster than second-placed Talitha Fitzgerald.
