Mapei cleans up at Langkawi

Despite its relatively lowly 2.3 UCI status, the Tour de Langkawi is one of the world's richest races in terms of prize money. According to unofficial figures, the race handed out over a million Ringgits (RM), and with a Ringgit worth about US$0.263 that's hardly chump change.

Mapei were the big winners, with the team's pair of Paolos, Bettini and Lanfranchi, taking home RM109,400 (US$28,772) and RM107,100 (US$28,167) respectively. With other team members' prizes, and the overall team victory, Mapei's total take was RM252,700.00 (US$66,460).

Mercury-Viatel took second place in the money game, with RM138,100 (US$36,320) and Ceramiche Panaria third, RM66,425 (US$17,470). Financial lanterne rouge was Canada, with RM3,575 (US$940).

Ochoa still serious

Kelme cyclist Javier Ochoa is still in a very serious condition following the accident last Thursday that killed his brother Ricardo. Javier is in a stable coma in the Carlos Haya de Málaga Hospital, where he remains under observation. No operations are planned for the next few days, during which time the extent of the damage to the cyclist will be more fully assessed.

Ochoa has maintained his intracranial pressure and needs medication to keep up his arterial blood flow. He continues to use a mechanical breathing apparatus.

Jalabert can leave today

Injured French cyclist, Laurent Jalabert, will be able to leave the hospital in Geneva on Monday, according to his CSC-World Online team. Jalabert has spent the past week in hospital after falling from a ladder at his home, fracturing three vertebrae in his lower back.

According to reports, Jalabert's morale is improving although he is still having difficulty walking due to bruising. "The most important thing is that he returns to normal life," said CSC director Johnny Weltz to AFP. "Because it is not much fun to stay in hospital. But it was necessary to keep him there for a few more days to look after these fractures that can't be operated on, and require some curing time."

Mengoni on the mend

After suffering serious head trauma on January 11 Fred Mengoni has made a amazing turnaround and his recovery is going extremely well. It is anticipated that Fred will released from St Mary's Hospital, Friday February 23 and will return to his home in New York City to continue his recuperation.

Martini turns 80

Former Italian national technical director, Alfredo Martini, has turned 80 today. He celebrated his birthday with a great party put on by his fellow citizens in Sesto Fiorentino's "palazzetto dello sport". In 23 years as a commissaire, Martini helped Italians to win most of the major races in the world including 6 World Championships, and has served as honorary president of the FCI (Italian Cycling Federation).

In comments made to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Martini reminisced about the good old days. "Today, it is not as hard as it used to be," he said. "Because there are better bikes and roads, the races are better organised and there is better nutrition. But with respect to the years I rode in, as well as those in which I was the 'Admiral', there was more tension, and the riders were under a lot of stress."

While he was in charge of the Italian national squad, he said that there were "designated leaders who had to take responsibilities in races. With the others I spoke clearly to them, reminding them that they were professionals and not children. Therefore, I succeeded to amalgamate the gruppo."

Six world titles was the result, but they weren't all easy with many big egos and a lot of talent to deal with. In Colorado Springs in 1986, Martini managed to persuade Moser, Saronni, Baronchelli and Visentini to let Argentin go for the win. He succeeded, giving Martini his third World Title as director. Maurizio Fondriest and Gianni Bugno added three more over the next five years, but since then things have been a little lean under Antonio Fusi. For many Italians, Martini will remain as the number one.

Cycling Tasmania announces 2001 track squad

Cycling Tasmania yesterday announced a strong squad of 22 riders to represent the State in next month's Australian Track Championships. CT president Greg Nunn announced the team after the Tasmanian State Track Titles at the Launceston Silverdome.

Heading the squad will be 2000 Burnie Wheel winner Darren Young, the only male senior rider named in the squad. Young, although now living in Victoria still holds a Tasmanian racing licence and will represent the Apple Isle at the Chandler Velodrome in Queensland from March 21-24.

Louise Yaxley is the only open class female rider, while the State's best hopes of national glory may rest with Under 19 riders Stephen Rossendell, Belinda Goss and Mark Jamieson.

The traditionally strong Mersey Valley-Devonport Cycling Club boast eight Tasmanian representatives, including Young, Goss, Jamieson, Jarrod Burr, Ty Winduss, David Klyne, Matthew Bonham and first year riders Natasha Mapley and John Rayner.

Kissena Cycling Club/Development Team

The Kissena Developmental Team, now in its second year of existence, has announced its new lineup for the 2001 season. The Developmental Team is dedicated to developing promising new racers into regional and national caliber riders through the proper introduction and incorporation of a team oriented philosophy to training and racing. The Developmental Team, primarily composed of Category 3 riders will once again be contesting the major stage and one day races in the Northeast, including Fitchburg-Longsjo, Killington and Bear Mountain.
