The second race in the Trittico Lombardo series, Coppa Agostoni, has been won by Francesco Casagrande (Fassa Bortolo) after a hard fought finish on a hot day in August. Casagrande beat last year's winner Jan Ullrich (Telekom) in a two man sprint, after Ullrich had attacked on the last climb. Gianluca Tonetti (Selle Italia) took third after being dropped near the end.

The Trittico Lombardo is a series of three races with a trophy awarded for the best performed rider over all three. Some cyclists compete in each race, while others, such as Ullrich and Casagrande, used it to prepare for Sunday's Championship of Zurich in Switzerland.

Ullrich is in similar form to last year and was one of the main protagonists in the race, forcing the pace on the 13% climb of Lissolo with three of five laps completed. He took Casagrande, Tonetti and Gianluca Valoti with him, and the four steadily built a gap over the main group.

On the last lap with 22 kilometres to go, Valoti was dropped, followed by Tonetti at 7 kilometres to go. In the sprint, Ullrich was leading Casagrande, who attacked with 200 metres to go to open up enough of a lead to win.

"To beat Ullrich is worth double," said Casagrande. "I came around him at 200 metres to go and got 10 metres. Jan pushed a gear too big in order to catch me."

A slightly disappointed Ullrich said that "I am satisfied enough with my performance, but I honestly believed that I would win like last year." He has his eyes on Sunday's World Cup, as does Casagrande.
