Australian rider Tracey Gaudry took out the international A Grade Women's event at the inaugural Civic Fiducian Canberra - Cooma Cycle Classic over the weekend. Tracey was riding for the first time with her new professional team Timex, who arrived in Australia only last Friday. It was a great start to her Olympic preparation for the rider who had been involved in a crash earlier this year when a car ploughed into her and several other women whilst on the way home from a race.

"The team were really working for me on my home ground", Tracey said. "Still jet lagged they put in a great effort and this result augurs well for the important UCI category races coming up in the Canberra/Cooma region over the next few weeks."

After a winning the road race on Saturday, Gaudry followed up with another strong result in the criterium on Sunday, finishing fourth. Her teammate, Sanna Lehtimaki (Finland) was part of a group of 3 riders that lapped the field, with Dutch sprinter van Melis jumping clear to take the win from Kristy Scrymgeour and Lehtimaki.

The only overall changes from yesterday saw Timex rider Odessa Gunn move up to 3rd overall, with a higher placing in the final criterium, to push Dutch rider Arenda Grimberg back to 4th.

As well as the winning the overall race, Tracey was first over the top of both Queen of the Mountain climbs and claimed a solo stage one victory in Saturday's road race to Cooma. A very good result against 40 riders from both home and overseas. AIS rider Sara Carrigan was second and Odessa Gunn (Can) from team Timex was third.

Men

A field of over 50 riders also contested the men's A Grade race. The winner overall was Nic Brown from Parramatta, second was Ashley Humbert, Wagga and third Peter Milostic, Penrith. Canberra rider Denis Mungovern rode a strong race for fourth, and took home the green Sprint jersey.

The two day race attracted some 220 riders across the six grades, with good fields in all. The yellow jerseys were won by Matt Smithson, Parramatta in Mens B grade, Fiona Dwyer, Bankstown in Women's B, Phillip Thuaux, Central Coast in Men's C and Adrian Estreich, Penrith in Men's D grade.

The success of the Canberra-Cooma Cycle Classic in its first year has encouraged the organisers who look forward to welcoming more riders next year to a race with points on the national and UCI calendar.

An enormous field of 190 riders met at Glenvale Crescent in Mulgrave today. The conditions were perfect, cool with a slight breeze and plenty of sunshine.

The A grade field was studded with local and international stars including the Great Britain World Teams Pursuit team consisting of Colin Sturgess (31, a gypsy), Bradley Wiggins (19 of London), Matt Illingworth (31, Essex), Bryan Steele (31, Peterborough), Chris Ball (25, Swindon) and Paul Manning (25, Manchester). Team manager Simon Jones told me that the team had spent two weeks in Perth, WA putting in plenty of K’s and racing local crits. They are in Melbourne until the 10th, including the Melbourne Madison where Wiggins and Steele will be looking to capitalize on their having raced four "sixes" in Europe this season. They then head for Sydney for three days on the Olympic Velodrome. The team had wanted to ride the track Nationals as last year but received late advice that this was not possible, as the Nationals are an Olympic selection event. From 10-20 March the team will be staying in Camden, an outer suburb of Sydney. During that time they will be eager to get in as much racing as possible and are eager to hear from clubs able to provide good competition.

Starting with 57 riders including the Brits, South Africa’s U23 champ, Americans, Dutchmen and a few others of doubtful heritage this race had the appearance of a Euro semi-classic! After a quick start with plenty of attacks, including one from the diminutive Anna Wilson (Saturn) who jumped away to try a solo, the race saw a strong break of six form at the 35-minute mark: Colin Sturgess (GB), BJ McIntosh (VIS), Dan Moore (Amore et Vita), Stephen Pate (Fitzroy Cycles), Michael Yarski (Giramondo) and Jerone Walters. Bridging up a lap or two later was Robert Tighello (Ashburton Cycles) and Bryan Steele (GB) and the lead group held an 8-second advantage. Hilton Clarke jnr (Look) rode across with Matt Illingworth (GB) in his wheel at the 50-minute mark with Simon Gerrans (VIS) stuck 5 seconds adrift.

A move from the collapsing remnants of the field saw Anna Wilson get across with Sth African Jeremy Martens (Giramondo) and three others. With 14 riders in the lead group, the decision seemed to be that there were too many present and the zip went out of the break. Shortly after the few who had persisted behind rejoined and the sprint was on the minds of many. At what should have been five minutes remaining, Matt Illingworth slipped of the front taking an attentive Stephen Pate with him as the remaining GB riders took it easy through the corners allowing the twosome to escape.

The chase went a bit longer than expected due to the presence of the B grade field between the break and pursuing aces, in fact the race went ten minutes over and Pate was not pleased! In the end Pate took the win from Illingworth who said he "didn’t have the legs left after pulling my guts out" staying with an in-form Pate. Troy Clarke, also at the top of his form for the Madison, was led out by younger brother Hilton to take the field sprint ahead of Robert Tighello. Illingworth commented "that was every bit as hard as a Premier League event" Just wait ‘till Tuesday night at Waverley Park boys!

The 47 riders of B grade rode hard throughout and kept pace with the storming A grade bunch for the later part of the race. A couple of breaks went in the early part of the race containing the usual suspects, but they weren’t given the opportunity to steal the race again as the bunch worked hard to keep it all together. The finale saw veteran Chris Boone win from Lincoln Brown, A Pike and Kevin Wigham.

The rising sprinter Johnny Clarke, youngest of the clan at 14, won C grade. His sprinting style, elbows out, saw him flash through ahead of "Fast" Eddie Perez, Andy Clarke (no relation) and Paul Kennedy. With 57 starters the group got three to go as D grade got the bell, near disaster as D grade caught them in the back straight, went past only to be met head-on by a mortuary van of all things! Luck was with us however and the van was not required.

D grade started with 29 and had a good race after the ten minute neutral, despite the mortuary van incident! The sprint saw Frank Cipriano slip around track out-marker Justin Dovaston to win by the barest margin. Third was Steve DiFullio with youngster Aaron Moody delighted at registering his first placing in D grade.
