Report

Vitalicio Seguros' rider Andrei Zinchenko (Rus) laid solid ground for his overall victory in the Escalada by winning the 24.4 km road race in solo style. In the last of the five ascents he attacked, disposing of Perdiguero, Zarrabeitia and Bettini.

In the ITT the Russian, living in Soria for five years, lost only two seconds to Melchior Mauri but he beat Perdiguero and Rubeira, who are normally his superiors in races like these. "I'm not very explosive so that's why I wasn't among the top riders in the first stage," said Mauri who rides for the Portuguese Benfica Team.

The World Champion Oscar Freire also showed up but managed only an eighteenth place, 2.08 behind winning team mate Zintckenko. "It was a hard race, especially after so many top races and travels that I've had this week. I wasn't able to do more than this" he said. Clearly, the young man is raced out, having done at least 15 races this year! In any case, the people of Barcelona went to the 'montaña mágica' to pay their tribute to the champion without giving too much attention to his position in the race.
