Report:

The Italians have now a dominating hold in this race. The last 5 editions have been won by riders from that country and this year is was Fabrizio Guidi's turn after Marco Serpellini had won it in 1996 and 1998 (no race was held in 1997).

The 199 km race in Wasmule and Bergen was marked by a long solo attack by Belgian Bert Roesems of the Tönissteiner-Colnago team. Roesems has just started the first of the finishing laps when he was caught after having been away for 50 kms.

On the finishing circuits there were several attacks and the tempo was very fast. But the last attack by Fabrizio Guidi was successful. The Team Polti rider went with 10 kms to go and was able to hold onto his lead. He was nearly caught in the final metres soloed to victory by 3 seconds from Biagio Conte and Dutchman Miguel Van Kessel.
