Holmes powers to win

By www.Londoncyclesport.com

The Deers Leap course was bathed in lovely sunshine and we all wondered if cross had become a summer sport.

Set on farm land the course featured no tarmac and was dusty leading to a number of washouts for those who didn't moderate their speed. A couple of nasty stones in 'Ducks Wood' caused a number of punctures.

Senior

A large field streamed across the grassy meadow at the start and we held our breath, but no one crashed as they funnelled onto the race course.

From the start Matt Holmes (Arctic/Shorter Rochford), Jon Sharpe (Saucony), Tom Randall (De Laune), Steve Hamblins (Activ Folkstone) and Steve Price (De Laune) set the pace swapping the lead regularly.

Price put in a huge effort and prised himself off the group to take to the front with Sharpe on his wheel and Holmes just a little down. But in the space of one lap Holmes had made up the gap and took to the front, just after Price was forced out with a mechanical.

With Holmes riding strongly toward victory Nick Kinsey (Team Noah) seemingly stealth like had moved himself up the order, we knew he was racing fast, but we must have lost track of the race as Kinsey took 2nd and was top veteran whilst Sharpe, Hamblin and Randall entertained us with a great battle. In fact the dry conditions lent itself to close racing and there was plenty to be found this day.

Top woman was Abigail Armstrong (London Phoenix).

Youth

Despite the National Trophy race at Matlock taking away a number of Youth riders a good number took on the Dear Park course. James Coop kept the VC Deal name at the forefront of Youth cycling with a good win ahead of Kirk Jenns of Team Darenth.
