Friday Night Winter Track Racing

Dunc Gray Olympic Velodrome, August 30, 2002

Hopkins wins Wheelrace in a thrilling finish

Week 16 saw the running of the Men's Division 1 Handle Bar Tavern Wheelrace over 5 laps of the Dunc Gray Olympic Velodrome. With one of the strongest fields assembled this season, and the late withdrawal of Alex Sommer (20 meters) the lone scratch rider Shaun Hopkins had it all ahead of him. Giving 30 meters to his nearest rival Hopkin's exploded from the start and within a lap had made contact with the Bicisport train led by Stuart Miller, Patrick Naughton, David Browne and Phil Dixon. The pace remained high as John Lovick (Orange) and Chris Young (Parramatta) set the tempo, but in hot pursuit was the Illawarra pairing of Grant Law and Adam Rourke, tucked away behind them was Robert Upton (Harlequin). With less than a lap to go the back markers caught the field. At 125m to go Hoppy showed his class by going high on the track using every inch he could extract from the 42% banking, to just sneak in ahead of the fast finishing duo of Robert Upton and Phil Dixon, followed by Michael Stokes and Stuart (always looking for a wheel) Millar.

There was no change to the top 5 placings in division 1 with Shaun Hopkins retaining a big lead over the field in the progressive points series. Division 2 saw the dual between David South and Mick Kejda intensify with David once again scoring 33 points to 10 to regain his lead in the Series points ladder. Keith Oliver (Parramatta) made his debut to FNWTR scoring 50 points on the night and showing his mastery in tactics against opponents many years his junior.

The Blues Bros, Hugh and Jim Gray of the Waratah Vets club continue to close in on Scott Williams in Division 2A and are within striking distance of the series points lead. Racing in this division has been extremely competitive with Brian Radcliffe , Bill Cox (Hunter Districts) and Gary Oliver (Manly) pushing the Blues Bros to their limits in order to score points. No change to division 3 top five where Trevor Shields (Parramatta) holds a comfortable lead over Nick Bregolin of Lidcombe.

The Women's racing was again controlled by Tanya Newton (Bicisport) over Keels McNamarra (St George), the series points lead once again changing hands as Tanya top scored with 60 points on the night over Keels 34 points. Catriona Owens, Tunde Berryhill and Karen Dutton rode strongly picking up valuable points edging them nearer to a top five series points finish. Sandra Beaumont wrestled the lead from Kyles Spencer in the Women's Division 2 category, top scoring with 29 points.

Next Friday Night (6/9) Sees The Final Madison Of Our Winter Track Season. It Is Also The Running Of The Women's Handle Bar Tavern Wheelrace. Riders From Orange, Wagga, Hunter Districts And Illawarra Will Be In Action Next Friday Night For Yet Another Exciting Night Of Track Racing At The Dunc Gray Olympic Velodrome.
