Wheelrace win for newcomer Michael Thompson

The feature race on week 14 of Friday Night Winter Track Racing was the 5 lap "Handle Bar Tavern Wheelrace" for Division 2 and 2A riders. 18 Riders greeted the starter for 5 laps of sheer adrenalin rush. The scratch markers of Scott Williams and Alex Bird had it all ahead of them giving away up to 150 meters start to Ken Woodhouse (Randwick Botany). With a guaranteed additional 10 meters start by Woodhouse through the professional pushing of Brad Cox, Woodhouse was always going to be the rider to catch. He quickly established a sizeable lead that kept him ahead of the main field led by Michael Thompson and Michael Popplewell with the hard chasing scratch bunch in hot pursuit. With a lap to go Woodhouse was merely going through the motions, Popplewell and Thompson were in hot pursuit with the backmarkers still with some 30 meters to make up. With 50 meters to go Woodhouse succumbed to Thompson and Popplewell with the scratch rider of Alex Bird failing by the narrowest of margins to catch the three placegetters finishing a creditable 4th.
In the Division 1 Men, Phil Dixon (Bicisport) took maximum points with consistent placings across all events. Phil nudged out the young up and coming 16 year old rider from Penrith, Phillip Stokes who finished with a creditable 40 points and the ever consistent Shaun Hopkins (Parramatta) 37 points for the night. Hopkins has now established himself as a clear leader in the progressive series points competition. Justin Worthington (Parramatta) was a clear winner in Division 2 accumulating 37 points finishing ahead of Glenn Ion (Waratah Vets) 20 points. Glenn rode exceptionally well all evening, particularly in the Division 1 point's race where he finished amongst the leaders.
Jim Gray (Waratah Vets) was the stand out performer in Division 2A earning 35 points, just edging out Michael Popplewell (Waratah ) 30 points with the Canberra flyer Alex Bird picking up a valuable 25 points.
Two points separated Glenn Wright (Southern Highlands) and Michael Thompson (Bankstown) in Division 3 with Nick Bregolin (Lidcombe) coming home a close third with 20 points.
The Women's races were again competitive from the outset. 15 riders facing the starter in two divisions. Rebecca Ellis (Canberra) is quickly finding her form making it a clean sweep of all events capturing 60 points. Tanya Newton (Bicisport) went head to head with Squeels McNamarra (St George), 9 points separating the pair on the night. Catriona Owens and Amanda Whiteman continue to make the most of their promotion to Division 1 scoring 24 and 22 points respectively. Division 2 women saw the return of the Cookie Monster from Canberra, (Louise Cooke). Cookie rode aggressively all night picking up 35 points edging out Sian Mullholland FIT Club, Canberra and Kyles (always looking for a dance) Spencer of Illawarra accumulating 22 points to retain her outright series lead.
