Godfrey starts defence of Omnium title

By Gerry McManus in Pruszkow, Poland

Reigning men's omnium world champion Hayden Godfrey made a fine start to his title defence when the New Zealander won the 200m individual time trial with a time of 10.502 beating sprint specialist Tim Veldt (Netherlands). Canada's Zachary Bell was third, with Aussie Howard Leigh in fourth.

The 'pentathlon' of cycling sees an interesting mix of sprinters and endurance riders racing for the overall title with the rider with the lowest number of points taking the gold medal.

It was Leigh who went top of the leader board when he finished second the round two scratch race won by German Robert Bartko. Zachary Bell (Canada) had created a breakaway group with Godfrey being the last man to cross over and finishing 8th in the sprint.

Bartko finished fifth in the 3,000m individual pursuit won by Ukrainian Volodymyr Diudia and now leads the overall standings with 12 points after three events with two to go. Taylor Phinney could only manage second place in the pursuit with Russia's Atur Ershov in third.

Bell lies second overall with 13 points with Leigh third on 14 so it is all to play for heading into the points race. Godfrey is fifth with 19 points and should give good value for money in the final event in the kilometre time trial

Pendleton and Kanis back in contention via the repechage

No one would blame Britain's Victoria Pendleton if she didn't ride the Keirin on the final day of the championships. She picked up her third medal of the championships last night when she beat Wily Kanis (Netherland) to retain her title as world sprint champion but still lined up for the Keirin first round this morning.

Both Pendleton and Kanis lost out in the first round but find will compete against each other again this afternoon in round two after they won their repechage heats.

Guo Shuang (China), Clara Sanchez (France) and Simona Krupeckaite (Lituania) all won their heats in the first round.
