Track World Cup 07-08 Round 3 - CDMLos Angeles, California, January 18-20, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Session 5 - January 20: Men: Qualifying: Sprint, Madison; Women: Qualifying: Team pursuit, KeirinFrench continue dominance in men's sprintBy Laura Weislo in Los Angeles The depth of the French team became even more apparent in Sunday's sprint competition. Having already taken gold and silver in the team sprint, and victory in the keirin, the French succeeded in taking three of the top four seeds in the 200m qualifier. Kévin Sireau, Mickaël Bourgain and Gregory Bauge went first, second and fourth. Only German Max Levy would cause the French riders any consternation when he set the fastest early qualifying time. His 10.245 held from his fourth starting spot until Sireau smashed it with a 10.128. The French riders also had no problem advancing in the 1/8 final, with Sireau dispatching his team-mate Didier Henriette. The surprise of this round was the win by American Adam Duvendeck over Australian Mark French. The 2004 Olympic team member received huge cheer from the crowd during the race, no doubt helping to propel him to victory. Duvendeck's luck would end there, as he drew Sireau as an opponent in the quarterfinal and was beaten by the Frenchman in two rounds. Italian Roberto Chiappa was the one rider who could get the better of the French riders. He defeated Bourgain in a near photo finish on the third round. Dutch rider Teun Mulder defeated Levy, and Bauge dispatched Australian Ryan Bayley to advance to the semifinal round. Thrills and spills in women's keirin heatsThe women's keirin provided the sizeable crowd in Los Angeles with plenty of exciting action on Sunday morning. The top two riders in each heat would advance. The first heat was a neck and neck finish between Dutch rider Willy Kanis and Jane Gerisch (Germany). Kanis tried to come over the top of Gerisch on the final bend, but the German proved to quick. Australia's Kerrie Meares was on the bubble in third, and faced the repechage. The second heat was a game of cat and mouse. Anna Meares (Toshiba) found herself second wheel just before the motor pulled off, and opened a bit of a gap on the German Dana Glöss to force the other riders to come around. Content to work her way back to fourth wheel, Meares waited until the final lap to pounce, leading out the sprint so quickly that a gap opened up behind her. Only China's Jinjie Gong (Giant) could match the speed of the Australian, and was able to take the sprint by a slim margin. The third heat was the domain of Cuba's 500m ace Lisandra Guerra, and she put that skill to good use in the keirin, taking the lead well outside of the final lap and holding off the group until the line. The finale was marred by a crash, with Lulu Zheng (China) touching wheels at the back of the bunch in turn one and going down. The tactic of Guerra was equalled on the final heat by American Jennie Reed. The Momentum Cycling rider put on the gas with a lap and a half to go, and the rest of the riders could scarcely hold her wheel. She won handily ahead of Colombian Diana Maria Garcia. Valentina Alessio (Italy), Olga Panarina (Ukraine), Glöss and Russian Swetlana Grankowskaja advanced to the finals on repechage. Ukraine blitzes women's team pursuitThe Ukrainian team confirmed its prowess in the pursuit events, putting the women on top of the qualifiers by four seconds over the Russian team. Powered by individual pursuit gold medallist Lesya Kalitovska, the World Cup leaders were ahead at each time check, gaining 1.8 seconds on the first kilometre, then tacking on an additional second each subsequent kilo to finish with a 3.30.155. The German team took a slower start, beginning with the fifth fastest kilometre, and then working their way up the ranking with the third fastest middle and final kilometres. The American team of Lauren Franges, Kristin Armstrong and Christy King suffered somewhat on the final kilometre. The trio set the fastest early time, but would be pushed down to fourth place, but easily making the bronze medal final with a generous 2.6 second advantage over the next fastest Belgian squad. "I was feeling the efforts of the past two days," Franges explained. She explained that the team had practiced their exchanges, but pulling it off smoothly during the race was difficult. "This is our first time doing this event in competition," she continued, "I was doing half lap pulls because I knew I'd be suffering from the hard racing last night, and so Kristin did longer pulls." The Cuban squad did not start after rider Yoanka Gonzales suffered a crash the previous evening in the points race. She was sent to the hospital as a precaution, but escaped serious injury. However, the blow to her head spelled the end of her World Cup weekend.
