Great Britain and Netherlands continue strong showing

The second day of competition at Beijing's newly built Laoshan velodrome followed a similar pattern to the first, as Great Britain and The Netherlands netted two gold medals apiece to continue their winning ways at the 'Good Luck Beijing' Olympic test event.
Riding without world pursuit champion Bradley Wiggins, the British team pursuit quartet of Ed Clancy, Steve Cummings, Geraint Thomas and Paul Manning qualified fastest in 4.04.659 to set up a final against a surprise New Zealand squad. The Brits then rode another two seconds faster in the final to take gold comfortably and show that the new Beijing track may yield some fast times in the warm conditions at next summer's Olympics. In the ride-off for third and fourth, The Netherlands successfully defeated Denmark to take bronze.
Further success for Great Britain came in the men's keirin, as world kilometre champion Chris Hoy took gold from Frenchman Arnaud Tournant - the man whose world kilometre record he narrowly failed to break at altitude in Bolivia last May. Olympic champion Ryan Bayley also made the final, but wasn't satisfied at fourth behind Dutchman Teun Mulder. "I was happy with my ride in the second round to make it through to the final but I wasn't happy with my ride in the final," said Bayley. "I'm mad at myself because I blew it and I know I could have won."
Multi-talented Dutch sensation Marianne Vos gave another demonstration of her extraordinary ability by adding the women's points race gold to her scratch race victory from yesterday. Vos, a former world champion on the road and in cyclo-cross, pipped Cuban Yoanka Gonzalez Perez in a countback as both scored 12 points but Vos won the final sprint home. Australian Kate Bates' second place in the final sprint moved her onto nine points and into the medals at the expense of compatriot, Belinda Goss, who was fourth with eight points.

"I was pretty disappointed last week and tonight is certainly a confidence boost because this is where the Olympics will be," said Bates, who is the reigning points race world champion. "I think I picked my act up a bit this week and really had to tough it out."
The Sydney rider acknowledged the pressure of being world champion and racing in front of her home crowd last weekend affected her more than she expected it would. "I wouldn't have admitted going into Sydney that I felt that pressure but my reaction after the event - I was just glad it was over," said Bates. "I've waited my whole career to get a stripey jersey but the pressure I put on myself to defend it in Sydney was too much."
The Netherlands added their second gold of the evening when Yvonne Hijgenaar and Willy Kanis comfortably won the women's team sprint from French pairing Sandie Clair and Clara Sanchez.
The remaining golds on day two went to American Mike Friedman in the men's scratch race, Cuban Lisandra Guerra Rodriguez in the women's 500m time trial and Frenchman Francois Pervis in the men's 1km time trial.
