World pursuit champion Bradley Wiggins showed that his form is right on track for a repeat performance in Manchester next year. The British rider took gold in the men's individual pursuit on the first day of racing in Beijing over Ukrainian Volodymyr Dyudya. Russian Alexander Serov took the bronze ahead of the 17 year-old American Taylor Phinney.

Marianne Vos, a former world road and cyclo-cross champion gave the Netherlands one of two gold medals of the evening, launching a blistering attack in the final laps of the 10 kilometre women's scratch race to win gold in her first international track race ahead of Australian Belinda Goss and Cuba's Yumari Gonzales Valdivieso.

In the sprint for the remaining medals, a fast finishing Goss overtook several rivals including the reigning World Champion from Cuba to secure silver. "There were certainly a lot of attacks going in that race," said Goss. "Vos is a great rider and it wasn't totally unexpected for her to attack like that but I'm really happy with how I rode the race and how it worked out in the end."

The Dutch riders scored another gold medal in the men's team sprint, with the team of Theo Bos, Teun Mulder and Tim Veldt coming from a second place qualifying position to beat the French team of Gregory Bauge, Arnaud Tournant and Francois Pervis by just six one-hundredths of a second in the final. The British squad took third over Team Toshiba of Australia.

In the men's points race, reigning World Champion Juan Llaneras took the win over Chris Newton (Great Britain), a former World Champion, and Australia's Cameron Meyer (Toshiba). Meyer, who won three junior World Championship gold medals in 2006, has been a revelation in his first senior year, placing fourth in the event at the World Championships and collecting bronze both in Beijing and last week in Sydney.

"Tonight's race was much more suited for me than last week where the attacks were flying all the time and the pace was so fast," said Meyer. "Tonight I was able to get onto the attacks and gain laps when I needed them plus I managed to win one of the sprints and figure in a few of the others."

The women's sprint competition showed a return to form for World Champion Victoria Pendleton, who made it through to the gold medal round against Belarus' Natalia Tsylinkskaya, but lost to Tsylinkskaya in two rounds in the final. Australian Anna Meares lost out in the bronze medal final to French woman Clara Sanchez after being relegated in the first match, and losing to Sanchez in the second.

"I was a little disappointed with how I rode Vicki (Pendleton) in the semis," said Meares, "but happy with how I came back and raced Clara (Sanchez) in the bronze medal final even if I lost." Meares, who took silver behind Dutch rider Willy Kanis was upbeat about her performances to date. "The goal at World Cups is to qualify for the Olympics, try out some new tactics and gain some valuable knowledge about my opponents - so I'm happy so far."

In the women's pursuit, it was once again the Katie Mactier show. The Australian, who won the gold in Sydney last week, was the fastest by almost two seconds in the qualifying. She posted a time of 3:35.181 to set up an gold medal showdown with Olympic silver medallist rower Rebecca Romero from Great Britain.

"I couldn't be happier," said Mactier who in the final was in front from the gun and finished almost three seconds quicker than Romero. "I absolutely came here to qualify for the Olympic Games and it's a really good to get a feel for China and the track and a great feeling to win on this track."
