2006 CQU Rockhampton Cup on WheelsQueensland, Australia, January 20-21, 2006Day 2 - Saturday, January 21Callaghan claims Rockhampton Cup on WheelsBy John Michael Flynn It may be called the 'Cup on Wheels' but the Central Queensland University Rockhampton Cup won't be going anywhere over the next twelve months after local lad Jay Callaghan stayed one step ahead of the scratch markers (and the handicapper) to win the lucrative 1600 metre handicap wheel race. In fact, the final washup from the feature men's event of the packed two nights of racing at the Kenrick Tucker Velodrome produced a Central Queensland trifecta, with Mackay's Craig McLennan claiming second, and Callaghan's Rockhampton club-mate Wade Cosgrove, third. Callaghan, who had looked sharp during the two packed night of track events, entered the heats of the Rockhampton Cup sporting a one hundred and ten metre advantage over the scratch markers, But with seasoned track carnival journeymen including Todd Wilksch and Jeff Hopkins looming large at the back end of the field, Callaghan's game plan for the final was always going to be to make the most of the advantage and go from the gun, then try with every bodily effort to hold on! It was a plan which worked to perfection, Callaghan now able to add his name to an impressive list of winners who've taken the Rockhampton Cup home since its inception in 1960. Le Lay wins Capricornia CupIn the feature women's event of the Rockhampton track carnival, the Capricornia Cup 1600 metre wheel race for women, difficult handicapping decisions would again play a major role in the outcome. The race handicapper's decision to extend a further ten metres between scratch markers Liz Georgouras, Anouska Edwards and the remainder of the field, proved significant in the final outcome. With an advantage of fifty metres over the two 'girls most likely', Rockhampton sprinter Alexandra Bright had arguably the best position of the race. The local rider providing early hope of a Rockhampton double in the feature events. "At a lap and half to go I decided to go," Bright told Cyclingnews post race after taking second place and a thousand dollar share of the prize purse. "I got away and (Courtney) Le Lay caught me, basically sat on my wheel. "Coming into the final bend I was in the front and I thought I might have had it and as we headed out of the corner I kicked with what little I had left." Le Lay however wasn't to be shaken from the wheel of her older and more experienced rival. The Australian Junior Club Road Champion gritted her teeth once again as she motored to yet another impressive victory against the senior women, displaying the sort of form which suggests bigger things might be just around the corner for the under 19 talent at next week's National Track Championships in Adelaide. Le Lay made the journey North to Rockhampton as a final step in her preparation for the Senior National Track championships.Aiming up against the elite women, was the best way to lift her standard. "Yeah for sure it'll make me strong," Le Lay told Cyclingnews. "I'm glad to have them ( the senior women) as competitors."
