Track World Cup Round 3 - CDMCape Town, South Africa, April 11-13, 2003Day 1 - April 11Van Zyl comes goodBy Annemarie Penderis SA track star, Jean-Pierre Van Zyl did not disappoint his supporters this weekend, taking a silver medal in front of the home crowd on the first day of competition in the UCI Track World Cup in Capetown. It was the first time that South Africa hosted this prestigious event that attracted 250 athletes from a record 39 countries. This event was the third leg of the competition that will see the cyclists move to Sydney, Australia for the final stage before the World Championships in China in July. Spectators were treated to record breaking performances by defending world champions in the various disciplines, including British cyclist Chris Hoy who broke the 1km time trial record in a time of 1.03.302, with an average speed of 56.87 km/h. But all performances were eclipsed by the pride of South Africans in JP Van Zyl's performance, taking a the silver medal in front of a home crowd behind Alexander Aeschbach of Switzerland. "This has been one of the most amazing evenings in our lives," said an emotional Hilda van Zyl, Van Zyl's's mother and number one fan. "When he won the gold in Italy and received the freedom of Milan, we weren't there. When he won the bronze in Australia - we weren't there. It is so difficult to describe the feelings you experience when you watch your son going up against some of the top names in racing." During the final lap of the 15 kilometre scratch race, four riders went down and Iijuma Makoto of Japan was hospitalised for observation. In the 30km Points race the following day, Van Zyl did not fare as well, only managing ninth.
