Race 2 - March 13: Evening session,

Riders continue to smash records

National records continued to tumble during the evening session of the first day of the national track cycling championships in the ILT Velodrome at Invercargill. To accompany the four new records set in the morning's qualifying rounds, the evening session produced three more.

Sam Webster from Auckland beat the oldest record, set 26 years ago on December 5, 1981 by Alan Miller, in the Under 17 boys 500m time trial with a time of 34.680 bumping the previous best of 34.80. Auckland's Stephanie Mackenzie broke the Under 15 girls 500m time trial record of 41.348 with a time of 38.545 and Southland's Pieter Bulling set a new Under 15 boys 500m time trial record with a time of 36.783 - eight tenths of a second quicker than the old record.

The junior men's Under 19 individual pursuit produced the most exciting race with the two Mid South Canterbury teammates Shane Archbold, winner of a silver medal at the 2006 junior world track championships in the teams pursuit beating 16 year old Jason Christie, who was the fastest qualifier in national record time.

The biggest cheer was for local boy Pieter Bulling who took out the under 15 boys 500m time trial in a close fought win over Matthew Noble who was riding for West Coast North Island.
