Friday night winter track racing

Right from the start of the night, many people were talking about the clash of the titans in the round three '1 lap screamer'. The titans were: Patrick Bolan, FNWTR - 1 lap screamer record holder (19.47) and Daniel Ellis, Australian representative for the pending Junior World Championships. Currently, these two riders, despite being U19, are undoubtedly two of the fastest riders in Australia for this discipline. Find out how the battle panned out below.
The Feature Race of the night was The Maesrk Logistics 1km Wheel-race for div 4. Our scratch-man for this event was Canberra rider Howard Galloway however, the privilege of being the back marker was taken away from Howard by his teammate Grace Meisel Dennis who had dropped down a grade for the night, thus scoring a handicap of minus 5m. Out front was Div 4 debutante Edward Daniel on 120m. Edward has spent the first 3 weeks of FNWTR in Div 5 and was keen to test out the pace in the higher grade.
After a hectic start whereby many of the middle markers missed the whistle, Edward Daniel made the most of his advantage opening a huge gap on the rest of the pack. Peter McCrystal (70m) made an awesome start passing riders very quickly and went about reeling back the leader in a solo attempt. One of the riders to be overtaken by Peter was Brian Hopkins, who had trouble getting his 95kg+ carcass up to pace.
Half way through the event Edward had a massive lead and was chased by Peter with Brian building speed and the pack not far behind.
On the bell lap Edward had a seemingly unassailable lead and Brian had just surpassed Peter. In the bunch Howard blasted around the outside, setting out after the leading three riders. At this point Edward started to fold quicker than Superman on washing day. Despite holding a huge lead everything went pear shaped for the novice rider as his 70m lead started to dissipate with only 250m remaining.
In the end it was pretty simple for Brian Hopkins as he passed Edward with 20m remaining to take a great victory. After completing the first round of Handicaps for FNWTR the Hopkins family can celebrate, having taken home the spoils in two of the four Wheel races. Geoff (Softy) won Week 1’s Div1 Wheel-Race and now his dad Brian (Hardy) has won Week 4’s event.
The much anticipated round three’s '1 Lap screamers' produced some excellent results. I bring your attention to Division 3 Heat 3. Duncan Miller showed amazing speed in winning his race in a time of 20.87 seconds. This time would not be beaten until the big boys came out to play in div 1. At FNWTR we never force a rider to change grades however many would anticipate that Duncan would be advancing fairly soon.
The next race of note was the Division 1 Heat 4. In this race Shaun Hopkins and Gavin White did battle. Clearly these two riders have a lot of affection for each other as they were continuously rubbing each other for duration of this race. On the line, both riders were practically cuddling however, Hopkins prevailed as the winner. Later in the Handle Bar Tavern both riders were spotted having a lovers tiff over whose turn it was supposed to be on top.
As mentioned in this reports preamble, all eyes where on the battle of the titans for the final 1 lap Screamer. Bolan and Ellis lined up for their destiny in positions 4 and 3 respectively (Position 4 is the top of the track). From the whistle Bolan launched fastest and dived down the track immediately colliding with Ellis and forcing the other two riders out of the picture.
After the initial collision, Ellis maintained the inside line through bends 1 and 2. Bolan quickly and wisely made the decision between these bends to swing up slightly and back on to the wheel of Ellis. Coming into bend 4 Bolan launched his last ditched effort to win the race. Side by side the future of Australian sprinting came to the line with the final throw going the way of Daniel Ellis in a time of 19.57seconds.
Round 4’s Snowball’s were simply unbelievable fun, with all the races going down to the final sprint to determine the winner. Tactics played a significant part in determining the place getters for the race, with the preferred tactic to hold back for the later higher scoring sprints. For anyone interested in the tenth sprint of the division two races, where Keith Oliver protested vocally that he had won (which would have given the world record holder the victory), the video replay showed that the judges had made the correct decision with Bruce Masson popping his tyre in front on the line.
The night ended with our usual combines which allowed the endurance riders to really open up their legs. Did I say endurance riders, what’s going on when Patrick Bolan wins the final race???
