Friday Night Winter Track Racing Week 9

Dunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney, August 11, 2006

Close racing

By Paul Craft

FNWTR which most people know stands for Friday Night Winter Track Racing could easily stand for Fun Night With Top Racing, which really does encapsulate the whole FNWTR ethos.

The night started with its usual warm up scratch races. With big fields in all grades the first race in every instance was superb which gave us all a taste of what was to come later in the night.

The Feature race of the night was “The ORBEA 1.25km Wheelrace” for Div 2. With the maximum number field allowed of 24 riders spread over a mere 105m many where expecting a scratch race however my safety officer for the start correctly spread the riders out a little to prevent the inevitable overlapping on the starters whistle. Would the couple of extra yards for the limit riders give them edge? Most doubted it.

On the whistle Mark Scribens off 45m miss judged the speed of the slower rider immediately in front of him and politely laid his bike down on the track. All the riders behind Mark where hindered slightly however capable of riding around the fallen rider. Considering that all riders where now racing and that Mark was quickly off the track the Commissaire correctly called “play on”. However, for those riders behind who already had a tough task, the moments delay virtually ruled them out of contention barring a Floyd Landis Stage 17 effort.

Attention now drew to the limit riders who powered on oblivious to the incident behind. After the first lap the divisions had become clear with a lead group of five, chased by a second group of four and the rest of the field looking ragged and seemingly out of contention. In the lead group were Jack Bennet, Aaron Donley, Chris Chapman, Adam Lambert and Anthony Cole. They all had a great shot at the big prize.

On the last lap the chase group of four made contact however, they where unable to come around the now sprinting lead group. In the wash up, Goulburn riders Adam Lambert and Anthony Cole went 1 and 2 with young Illawarra rider Aaron Donnelly placing third.

On this night the main sponsor Orbea also had an impressive display of their 2007 new release models. FNWTR riders where drooling over the quality of the Orbea merchandise. Orbea are the manufacturers of world class racing frames. Check out their web site to find your nearest dealer.

Round 3

The Kierins as always where awesome. Many thanks to our derny rider for the night, 2002 World Sprint Champion Sean Eadie. Sean actually got a bit of a work out as he pedaled the motorised derny for all up 15 races.

In division 2 the series leader Keith Oliver simply defies any feasible description. Keith is a former world champion and the current World Record holder of the 500m Time Trial for his age group. How old is he you ask? Well Keith is 64 years of age but to look at him you would swear he was not a day over 63.

In this Kierin, the majority of the riders knew that Keith lacked the top end speed to win this race and unwisely ruled him out of contention. However the World record holder has an uncanny knack of seeking out the correct wheel. In this instance it was Paul Conner. Paul’s top end speed is impressive and he opened up to win the race, with the crafty Keith Oliver glued to his wheel. Everybody else was left scratching their heads, questioning the error they had just made.

Round 4

J-L Rathbone and Alex Carver where both simply superb in this round, however, my favourite race was in fact the division 4’s event. Still quite new to the sport, Peleton Sports CC rider Chris Hunt went on the attack 1 lap into the 15 lap race. He immediately opened a significant advantage which he maintained for the majority of the race. The field behind knew that Chris is a powerful rider and promptly gave chase. As the laps counted down so did the number of riders able to keep contact with the chasing field. The depleted bunch began to draw closer to Chris in the final 5 laps. Sensing that the chase bunch where going to fail, Brenton Anthony wisely launched a last ditch effort to bridge across to the Peloton Sports rider. Brenton was successful in his attempt making contact with Chris just before the bell. Coming into the final bend Brenton made his move around the big rider however, Chris knowing that he was about to be beat practically turned left in an attempt to prevent the young rider from coming around him. This action nearly sent Brenton into the fence. Left with no other choice, the Commissaire relegated Chris Hunt to last of the field. So after nearly 15 laps at near maximum heart rate at the front of the field Chris finished last. You have to love this sport!

Round 5

Well, after racing a massive amount of Kierins, which many people consider the most aggressive and dangerous races of all, with no falls followed by a round of Miss’n’Out races, which are notorious for mishaps, again with no falls, you would be excused to think that the night was destined to finish as smoothly as it started. This was not to be the case.

In the third last race, which is a scratch race, a rider who shall remain nameless decided he could fit through a gap that his front stem would have trouble squeezing through. The end result was six riders sliding along the track. I wish all the riders involved in this crash a speedy recovery. I will be sending out an email to you to check on how you are fairing. Consequently this race was called a non event.

The very next event was also a scratch race. In almost the exact same spot, a rider, who again shall remain nameless, had over a metre circular clearance of any other rider but simply dropped the bike on the track. The end result was another six riders sliding along the track. I wish all the riders involved in this crash a speedy recovery. I will be sending out an email to you to check on how you are fairing. Consequently this race was called a non event. You are excused if you think this paragraph is a carbon copy of the above paragraph.

The final Race the CNSW+ Maersk Logistics TIME BLASTER had a slightly depleted field with many superstitious riders stating accidents happen in threes. The time to beat was the impressive time set by J-L Rathbone two weeks ago of 8 minutes and 58 seconds (50.2km)

In the early parts of the race current World Masters Champion Peter Barnard complete with on bike computer set a steady pace of 49.9km/h for the first five laps. This equated to the bunch passing the time check after 10 laps a mere 3 seconds down on the schedule to beat 8:58. The next ten laps saw the entire field swapping off either full lap or ½ lap turns as the now significantly smaller bunch came through the 20 lap time check only 1.5 seconds down on schedule.

With only ten laps and 5 riders left Philip Stokes hit the front for a 5 lap turn that must have exceeded 55km/hr by the time he swung up the group was actually down to 3 riders. Volebreght hit the front to do his bit and swung up and out of the race leaving only J-L Rathbone and Graham Allborn to fight out the final two laps. On the final lap Graham simply could not hold on to the pace of the young Penrith rider and J-L consequently finished alone.

After a quick confirmation between the three time keepers it was clarified that J-L had just set a new record for 2006 of 8 minutes and 52 seconds to earn a cool $100 cash. To beat this time you will now need to ride in excess of 50.8km/h. That’s got fun written all over it, NOT!

$100 cash for J-L

Next weeks will be our second team’s night. I have learnt a lesson from the last time I implemented a team’s night and I think I have it down pat this time. When you sign on you will be allocated 1 of six coloured ribbons which will be attached via safety pin to your left sleeve and recorded on the sign on sheet. Racing will include a scratch race, 4 up sprints and the tactically difficult Winners race. The night will end with a team Italian Pursuit

Next week’s racing will be sponsored by VeloCraft. Although there will be no wheelrace, the top three pointscores of the winning team will receive a significant prize.
