Mellowdrome Championships - Asheville, NC, June 20, 2005

Asheville's Carrier Park at Amboy Road hosted the Mellowdrome Championships, a regional championship and National Championship qualifying event, on Saturday and Sunday, June 18 and 19. Sponsored by Liberty Bicycles and promoted by Mike Smith for the Asheville Bicycle Racing Club, the track racing event included Olympic and International races, eligible winners of which qualified to compete in the National Track Championships, to be held in Los Angeles in August.

The bicycle racing track, known as the Mellowdrome, is a member of the American Track Racing Association, and is recognized by USA Cycling, the governing body of American bicycle racing, as one of only 20 velodromes (bicycle racing tracks) in the United States. Each velodrome hosts a championship, from which national championship competitors are qualified.

Asheville's Kurt Begemann dominated the event, winning Gold Medals in Match Sprint, Team Sprint, Team Pursuit, Scratch Race, and Points Race, to go with a Silver Medal in the 1000 meter time trial. This was a masterful display of speed and durability, as Begemann competed in 14 separate races in the two day event. The Match Sprint final was an exciting best of three races taken by Begemann in three heats from Andrew Erskine, also of Asheville.

Track record times were set by Eugene (Bob) Black, of Beaufort, NC, in the 4000 metre individual time trial at an astonishing 4.57.10, by Andrew Erskine in the 1000 metre individual time trial at 1.13.40, in the Team Sprint by Begemann, Erskine, and Blair Hobgood (Asheville) at 1.48.55, and by Nancy Lux in the Women's 500 metre time trial at 38.94.
