Friday Night Winter Track Racing Week #13

Dunc Grey Velodrome, Sydney, September 10, 2004

Jana Pitman sees Time Blaster record fall

By Paul Craft

This week the FNWTR series also incorporated the NSW Winter State Track Titles which was certainly a highlight of t he night's program. The Title races brought in a larger than normal audience which made for a great atmosphere. Included in the spectators and keen to have a ride herself, was the current 400m hurdles World Champion Jana Pitman. Jana was a fantastic ambassador and kind enough to give an insightful interview, draw the Red Cross raffle and congratulate the winners of the 700c Wheelrace.

The feature race for the night was "The Div 4 700c 1km Wheelrace". 700c are the distributor of the fastest street fashion clothing. They provided FNWTR with $360 worth of clothing vouchers. 18 competitors lined up for the race which certainly belonged to the limit markers and more specifically, members of the Port Stephens club, who took 1st and 3rd making the 3hr journey each way well worthwhile. Scratch man, Simon Vagg (-20m) did well to catch the lead group but with so many riders he couldn't find his way to the front. At the front two young riders Brendan Laughlan (90m) and Teagan Hines (80m) overhauled the limit man Neil Schneider (100m) to fight out the finish. Brendan held off the fast finishing Hines to take the $180 prize.

700c are the suppliers of the fastest street fashion with a distinct cycling flair. I invite you to check out their great range of clothing. www.700c.com.au

The Third round saw each division line up for the Miss'N'Out race. Simon Vagg got his revenge to take out div 4. Alan Townsend has made the Miss'N'Out his specialty taking another decisive victory. Ivan Colig also got some revenge from missing the medals placing 4th in the title race, whilst Chris Pascoe simply won the div 1 event with very little fuss.

In an evening full of highlights the final combines were a fitting finale to an excellent nights racing. In the Div 3 + 4 combine Alan Townsend handed Joel Chant his 21st birthday present, when he attacked with 3 laps to go having Joel planted firmly on his wheel. Alan than proceeded to smash himself for his team-mate and friend, only swinging up on the bell. Joel took an impressive victory whilst Brad Craft bolted out of the bunch to claim second.

The Div 1 + 2 NSWCF+NSWIS Time blaster offered riders the chance of $50 so long as they beat record time of 9min 10sec. For the riders to take the money they needed to average more than 50 km/h which they successfully did passing the 10 lap check point on schedule and the 20 lap check point 6 seconds up. 24 riders started but this number continuously dwindled until only 6 riders remained for the final 8 laps. On the last lap it was only the Australian Champion Chris Pascoe left to smash the record time, stoping the clock at 8min 55seconds, an impressive average of 50.5 km/h

Next week will be the penultimate night of the series and the last chance to get direct qualification into the Campagnolo wheelrace. This will put added interest on the div 1 ZeroRh sunglasses 1km Wheelrace. The final combines will also produce 2 qualifiers and don't forget the always explosive Win'N'Outs along with a standard Point Score.
