International Race Season #2

Lehigh Valley, PA, June 11, 2004

Bicycle Racing League Finals Champions Crowned

By Jacob Burns

Friday, June 11, the second night of racing for the 2004 International Race Season at the Velodrome was a big night especially for up-and-coming riders in the Bicycle Racing League presented by Wachovia, KidsPeace, and the Nicole Reinhart Memorial Fund. Winners for the night included Becky Conzelman (Frisco Cycling Club) and Jame Carney (Northwestern Mortgage) who won all of their events for the night. The main event of the night, the BRL finals, featured girls and boys in the age groups of 10-13 and 14-18. In Group B, Kerry Burke (Team Thunder) rode a smooth ride to win the girls' 10-13 race. Andy Gallagher (Team Thunder) raced hard to capture the second win for his team. April Parsons (Speed Demons) won a close race for the girls' 14-18 age group. In the boys' 14-18 event, J.T. Pflegor (Express) pulled a surprise move to win the race.

Group A of the BRL finals featured a win by Steph Vargas (Thunder) for the 10-13 girls. The 10-13 boys race was a close competition, but Chris Vargas (Thunder) came out on top. The 14-18 girls race was won by Kara Snyder (Speed Demons) in a sure victory. The final BRL event, the 14-18 boys race, was won by Nik Reinert (Speed Demons).

The Women's 3-Mile Final was a tough race that was seemingly endless for its riders. Becky Conzelman was able to pull ahead to win the race, with 15-year-old Cindy Lakatosh (East Coast Velo) trailing close behind. Liz Reap (T.E.A.M. Fuji) finished third. The third event for the night was the Men's Mid-Atlantic Points Race, which was a grueling 60-lap challenge for all who competed. Bobby Lea (T.E.A.M. Fuji), Dan Larson (Cycle Science), Jame Carney (Northwestern Mortgage, and Kyle Wamsley (T.E.A.M) Fuji) gained a whopping 20 points by lapping the field with 24 laps left in the race. Carney went on to win the race, ending a total of 56 points. Right on Carney's wheel was Dan Larson, with 31 points, and Bobby Lea, with 30 points.

The Women's Miss-and-Out was dominated by the Martinez sisters, Veronica and Graciela, as they threw out riders left and right. Becky Conzelman (Frisco Cycling Club) was left to fend for herself against the Martinez sisters, but was able to kick and win the race by a landslide.

In the Men's Miss-and-Out, Jame Carney took his second win for the night as he rode easily past Gil Hatton (Gotham Cyclists) and Dan Larson (Cycle Science).

The Women's 1-km Final marked the end of the women's events. Unfortunately, there was a crash early on in the race. In the middle of the pack, Liz Reap (Team Fuji) went down, and took Nikki Raspa (Eastside Adventure) and Alane Ballweg down with her. Becky Conzelman took the win of the Women's 1-km Final to complete her winning streak of all three women's events.

The last event for the night was the Men's 1-km Final. Jame Carney finished first in this event after battling with Gil Hatton, to take the hat trick for the evening winning all three men's international events.
