Bicycling Magazine Madison Cup

Lehigh Valley, PA, July 9, 2004

Carneys take Bicycling Magazine Madison Cup

By Jacob Burns

The Lehigh Valley Velodrome was proud to host the 29th Annual Bicycling Magazine Madison Cup presented by Red Robin and WDIY 88.1 FM on Friday, July 9. Top Madison teams from around the world competed to win the longest running Madison event in the United States. Other events for the night included the Women's 20-Lap Preme Race and the Women's Mid-Atlantic Keirin Championships. Big winners for the night included Ashley Kimmet (Colavita- Bolla), who swept the women's events clean for the night, and Jame and Jonas Carney (Northwestern Mortgage), who won the 50-Lap Madison Chase and the final 105-Lap Madison for the night.

The Women's 20-Lap Preme race was an all-out battle between Ashley Kimmet (Colavita-Bolla) and Becky Conzelman (Frisco Cycling Club). Kimmet managed to keep her lead to take the win, while Conzelman finished a very close second.

The next event for the night was the Men's Bicycling Magazine Madison Cup presented by Red Robin and WDIY 88.1 FM 50-Lap Chase. As the first Madison event of the night, the race was tough and a good preview of the 105-Lap Madison. Sprints were won by Bobby Lea and Kyle Wamsley of T.E.A.M. Fuji, Jame and Jonas Carney of Northwestern Mortgage Cycling Team, and Mike Beers and Randy Smargiassi of Gotham Cyclists. The 50-Lap Madison was the Carney brothers' race, as they finished in first place.

Ironically enough, this will be the last night of Madison racing for the Carney brothers. T.E.A.M. Fuji's Bobby Lea and Kyle Wamsley were second in the standings at this point, and Marty Nothstein and Hayden Godfrey (Philadelphia Fusion) held third place. The Women's Keirin Final was an exciting event for its competitors as they jockeyed for good position. Once again, Ashley Kimmet and Becky Conzelman battled to the finish of this race. Kimmet pulled ahead at the last minute capturing first place, leaving Conzelman to walk away with second place. Veronica Martinez (Coach Argentina) was tenacious throughout the race, and finished third.

The last event of the night was the Men's Bicycling Magazine Madison Cup presented by Red Robin and WDIY 88.1 FM 105-Lap Chase. Once again, teams were fired up to compete in the grueling event. Riders were flung into competition left and right, and the end result was a first place finish for Jame and Jonas Carney, winning their final race together before Jonas's retirement. Second place went to the young team of Bobby Lea and Kyle Wamsley of T.E.A.M. Fuji, and Olympians Marty Nothstein and Hayden Godfrey of the Philadelphia Fusion team finished third.
