Local juniors fine-tune for nationals

By David Oliver

Members of the Tasmanian junior team had one of their final racing hit outs before the nationals at the Silverdome on Thursday night. The nationals are being held at the Silverdome early next month, and the locals were glad for the opportunity to get the upper hand on their interstate rivals.

In the Under 17's Ben Fielding and Clay Murfet both showed they will be good chances to repeat their national medals from previous years, with Sean Oliver and Alex Holden also both performing well.

Scottsdale's Ben Grenda and Devonport's Brendan Sutton rode well and will certainly be in contention for medals in the national Under 15 events. Dave Lyons rode consistently over the evening. The under 13 racing was dominated by Jake Laskey, with Stephen Heppel and David Stride filling in the minor placings for all events.

Only a small field of senior riders contested the evenings events, with Ryan Johnson continuing his recent form which has seen him finish second in the Austral Wheel and third in the state pointscore. Former Burnie to Launceston winner Dwayne Smith rode well along with Tarrisha Jones and Jarrod Harmon.

This Thursday night will be the Launceston City Cycling Club's final track club racing for the season, and will incorporate the prestigious Tasmanian State Madison Championship. The early favourites will be the TIS/Cyclingnews.com duo of Mark Jamieson and Darren Young, but they are sure to face tough opposition from the teams of Nathan Clarke/Daniel Cutting, Matt Rice/Matt Goss, Matt Conn/Jason Andersch, Dwayne Smith/Brendan Geale, Kaidan Homan/Ben Price, Stephen Rossendell/Peter Smith, Steve Price/Dave Dennis and David Oliver/Ryan Johnson.
