Lehigh Valley Velodrome

August 13, 2004

Carney comes from behind to give his team the Mid-Atlantic Team Sprint championship win

The Mid-Atlantic Team Sprints took place at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome on Friday, August 13 Winners for the evening included Sarah Uhl (Quark), Jame Carney (Northwestern Mortgage), Ashley Kimmet (Colavita Bolla), Julian Cushing (East Coast Velo), Shane and the Recliners for the Men's Mid-Atlantic Team Sprints, and The Cats in the Capes for the Women's Mid-Atlantic Team Sprints.

The men's racing included a 5-mile final, miss and out and the Mid-Atlantic Team Sprint Championship. The men's 5-mile final was won by Julian Cushing (East Coast Velo), with Gui Nelessen (Nerac.com) very close behind. Jame Carney (Northwestern Mortgage) then beat out Ben Barczewski (East Coast Velo) in a close ride for third. In the miss and out Jame Carney (Northwestern Mortgage) managed to win handily with a well-deserved second place going to Kyle Wamsley (T.E.A.M. Fuji). Ben Barczewski (East Coast Velo) finished third. In the Mid-Atlantic Team Sprint Championship Team Lakawambar (Andy Lakatosh of Tri-State Velo, Kyle Wamsley of T.E.A.M. Fuji and Ben Barczewski of East Coast Velo) took the top seed only to lose in a very close race in the final to Team Shane and the Recliners (Shane Kline of Salamander, Jame Carney of Northwestern Mortgage, and Becky Conzelman of Frisco Cycling Club). Carney and his team were 2 seconds back with one lap remaining but with his incredible speed Carney was able to easily take the win.

Women's racing for the evening was extremely competitive with top riders Sarah Uhl and Becky Conzelman leading the way. In the women's miss and out Sarah Uhl (Quark) dominated the entire field. She led the pack throughout the race, and breezed through the finish line in first place. Ashley Kimmet (Colavita Bolla) placed second, with Argentinian Veronica Martinez (Coach Argentina) in third. The women's 20-Lap points race was a close finish between Becky Conzelman (Frisco Cycling Club) and Ashley Kimmet (Colavita Bolla). Kimmet managed to pull ahead of Conzelman at the last second to win, leaving Conzelman with second place. In third place was a strong finish for Graciela Martinez of Coach Argentina.

In the Women's Mid-Atlantic Team Sprint Championship the times were close in qualifying with Conzleman's team taking the top seed. The final was then contested by The Cats in the Capes (Sarah Uhl and Allie Warfel) against the top seeds dubbed the Angel Biker Club (Becky Conzelman and Liz Reap). The Cats in Capes came from behind to beat the Angel Biker Club and take the upset win.

Junior under 16 riders also had a chance to show their talent three times for two categories, A and B, throughout the evening. Winners in the events included Colin Lepore of East Coast Velo and Nichola Latzgo taking each of their respective races.
