Friday Night Winter Track Racing #8

Dunc Gray Velodrome, July 18, 2003

By Paul Craft

The Feature Race this week was the Nokian Tyre Wheelrace for Division 2, which was dominated by the middle markers. Although the scratch riders, Chad Schneider and Michael Mellish, were able to join the leaders, they were unable to make it around the wall of riders to contest the sprint.

David South (Waratah Vets) took victory by the slightest of margins over Shane Wood. This was a big surprise, as David was on his first race back after breaking a collarbone in training. He is no Tyler Hamilton, but well worth a (gentle) pat on the back for a successful return to racing.

Malcolm Rodgers from Nokian Tyre's was on hand to present David South with his prize. He also had a display of the full range of Nokian Tyres. You can contact Malcolm for more details on 94151204 or visit: www.aeropannier.com.au.

All the races were hotly contested including the Italian pursuit rounds. These are proving to be most popular with all participants. Each team consisted of two women, three Div 3's, four Div 2's and three Div 1's, with the pace continuously building in this 12 lap team event. The winning teams were Team Sommer and Team Hobbs. Both races came down to the wire with both team captains having to extend themselves to take victory.

Although outstanding performances for the night were plentiful, two Port Stephens riders were notable.

Chad Schneider from Port Stephans has changed from a contender to a dominator in division 2. He has made steady progress throughout the FNWTR season and may find himself mixing it with the big boys in Div 1 if he continues to improve.

Kelly Furey also made the trip from up north to the DGV. Kelly had a fantastic night finishing first or second in all her Div 2b Races. Unfortunately she was DQ'd in the 15lap Scratch race after she made an illegal move in the final 100m under Keely McNamara.

Next week will be our monthly Division 1 Madison. If last months race is any guide it will be an action packed night with Alex Sommer and Phil Dixon out for some serious revenge after being narrowly defeated four weeks ago.
