Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
Results and Reports for AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Friday Night Winter Track Racing week 12Dunc Grey Velodrome, Sydney, September 3, 2004A new star emergesFNWTR has unearthed a rising star in sprint racing. Patrick Bolan (age 16) surprised many when he won his heat of the 1 lap screamer. However it was his time that shocked everyone. Moments before Shaun Hopkins had set a new FNWTR record winning his heat in a time of 20.00 seconds only to beaten by Patrick in a time of 19.82 in the very next heat. My only question is did Patrick's dad being the official time keeper have an influence? The feature race for the night was "The Div 3 Veloflex tyres 1km Wheelrace". Cycling Projects representative Felice brought along 3 sets of Veloflex tyres and some goodies from Campagnolo for the top 3 place getters of this prestigious race. With the prize pool once again exceeding $600, the Div 4 competitors were heading onto the track ready to take no prisoners in their bid for the significant prize. The big move in the race came with 2 laps remaining when Chris Murray (55m) launched from the growing lead pack with Richard Pettigrew (50m) on his wheel. The two then built a commanding lead and it was Pettigrew who played the smarter game to take the victory. Both Joel Chant (scratch) and Michael Leach (30m) from Div 3 rode well to qualify for the final Campagnolo 1.5km Wheelrace to be raced on Sept 24. Felice from Cycling Projects was on hand to proudly present the prizes. Veloflex makes the best tubulars and clincher tyres for your competition. Handmade with selected raw materials, one by one. Visit Veloflex at www.veloflex.it As reported earlier there were a few surprises in the third round 1 Lap Screamer. In this race riders draw for position to line up on the track in 4 up heats over 1 lap. All eyes were on the div 4 heat that contained the two Neils. Neil Liefels and Neil Land are ranked first and second on the season long point score. On this occasion Neil Liefels clawed back 4 points of his 7 point deficit. Probably one of the most interesting races of the night was the round 4 mystery lapper. With the riders not knowing how many laps the race is, the wise tactic was to stay near the front and wait for the bell. Spare a thought for Central Coast rider Richard Pettigrew (Veloflex wheelrace winner) who, after spending the majority of the race at the front, decided to drop back a little for a rest on what turned out to be bell lap. Root-Man and Darth Vader were the final two winners of the ultra fast combine scratch races to end the night. Next week, FNWTR will include the NSW Winter State Scratch Race Title. If you haven't entered yet please do so before Monday. I would also encourage division 4 riders to come for the FNWTR component of the night. Specifically for the 700c 1km wheelrace which is your chance to qualify for the final nights wheelrace.
