US Collegiate National Track Championships - NETrexlertown, USA, September 16-18, 2004Main Page Results Previous Day Day 3 - September 18: Women's Sprint, Men's Team Pursuit, Men's Points RacePenn State University takes the overall titleBy Jacob Burns The 2004 Penn State Lehigh Valley Collegiate National Track Cycling Championships presented by Subaru ended with blue skies after Hurricane Ivan left for Boston midday. Penn State, the title sponsor of the event, handily won the overall team title and numerous individual titles in the Championships. Also on hand for the evening was a ceremony to honor the 2004 Nicole Reinhart Memorial Fund scholarship winners. Winners of a scholarship included: Sarah Levy - University of Colorado In the men's sprint, it came down to two former national champions in Andy Lakatosh (Penn State University), top qualifier, and Rahsaan Bahati (Indiana University), the second seed in the event, for the championship. In a very dicey final Lakatosh jumped and held off Bahati for the final 200m. Josh Weir (Indiana University), a former junior national champion in the sprint, overcame Tom Hanley (Marian College) to take third. The points race for the men was hard fought with Penn State missing the initial breakaway. Their riders Bobby Lea and Mike Friedman chased and caught but were then left a little tired for the opening sprints. The break then lapped the field and it was all Bobby Lea as he came back with vengeance winning points sprints time and again. In the end Lea held off second place Dan Larson (University of Florida) and third place Stefan Rothe (Midwestern State University). The women's points race began with an immediate break including pre-race favorites Sarah Uhl (Penn State University), Jenn Wangerin (Indiana University) and Rebecca McClintock (University of Florida). Within 15 laps the breakaway lapped the field giving them a decisive lead. The remainder of the race the trio of Uhl, Wangerin and McClintock fought for points but in the end Wangerin proved victorious. Second place honors went to Uhl with McClintock securing third in the event. In the women's sprint Sarah Uhl, a former junior world champion in the event, shined as she qualified first then won every ride convincingly. Jenn Wangerin came in a close second with Teresa Vermillion (University of Washington) third. Penn State dominated the team events winning the Italian pursuit and team pursuit while placing second in the women's team sprint. Indiana University upset a strong Penn State squad to take the win in the women's team sprint.
