Stonefield Cycles Track LeagueNewcastle Under Lyme, Staffs, June 17, 2004By Chris Pyatt The first night of the Track League on the newly re-surfaced track showed that new record times will shortly be set on this smooth fast surface. The weather was kind for a change with a day of showers turning in to a dry evening for the 50 riders. The racing started with the highly successful Freewheelers Youth League. Several new faces to the league rode strongly with the wins spaced out over a number of riders. Georgia Oldfield, daughter of league sponsor Suzanne Longstaff rode for the first time and won one event and also scored two third places. Another first night win came from Tom Gowens with another first time rider Oriana Rathbone taking two third places.. Last years winner Declan Hattle scored one win and scored 7points on the night. The main league action started with two fast 200m times from the Under 16's. First Steven Hill, Newcastle RC 2001, who is 13 years old recorded 13.2sec followed by 15 year old Andrew Magnier, Newcastle RC 2001, timed at 12.68sec. This clearly shows that the potential for fast times on this track . Another impressive rider on the night was Laura Reynolds, Brereton Wheelers who won two events. Last years A Class overall Champion James Notley, showed the good form to win two events and score other good placings. Top winner of the night was first time rider Matt Sewell, cyclestore.co.uk., along with Ed Nicholson, Tunstall Wheelers and Ian Taylor, Brereton Wheelers. In the B Class the wins were spaced out. Most notable performance was Jason Jones who was he first B rider to finish in a fast 10 mile scratch after lapping the field with four A class riders. All riders commented on the smoothness of the track surface which will hopefully encourage even more riders to attend in the coming weeks.
