Armstrong rides to another Maillot Jaune

A dream can become reality, as Euskatel-Euskadi's Iban Mayo found out today when the talented 25 year old Basque climber from Igorre rode to a prestigious solo stage win on L'Alpe d'Huez. "To win here was a dream that became reality today. I was able to profit from attacking at just the right moment."
Mayo, who was 40th on GC, 6'11" behind Maillot Jaune Richard Virenque at the stage start in Sallanches this morning, leapt to third on GC, 1'10" behind new Maillot Jaune, four-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. Mayo's time up l'Alpe was 39'06", short of Marco Pantani's record of 37'35" set in 1997 or Armstrong's 38'01"of 2001.
Armstrong already knows very well how the dream of winning the Tour de France can become a reality. Today the reality of winning his fifth consecutive Tour is one step closer as Armstrong donned the Maillot Jaune once again at l'Alpe d'Huez. "I didn't have the greatest sensations or the greatest legs today", the four-time Tour de France winner was third on the stage and took over the lead at the 2003 Tour de France.
"It was a hard day [today] with a lot of attacks, with a long, tough day yesterday. So two days in a row like this [were hard]." After controlling the race for the second half of stage eight, Armstrong's US Postal Service presented by Berry Floor squad hit the base of l'Alpe like a runaway blue train. Armstrong said, "There's no doubt that Triki [Beltran] went too hard at the base of the climb, but he's new to the team and I guess the system isn't clear enough yet. A fast tempo is a good thing but that tempo was supersonic and that's not a good thing. Immediately, the tempo put Chechu Rubiera in trouble. We'll talk about that tonight and it won't happen again. I can confirm if it looked fast, it was very fast!"

Armstrong explained that today was not a great day for him. "I could tell on the Galibier that I wasn't on a great day today. At that point, I had to ride a conservative race. If you are realistic and have the experience to know it's not a great day, you don't need to make a show. I decided to let Mayo go and cover Beloki and limit my losses because he's close to me on GC. That worked out OK."
Indeed it did, as Armstrong was able to take over the race lead at this year's Tour, but the American knows that there are still 12 hard stages to go to Paris before he can celebrate.
As for the key moments on l'Alpe, Lance said post-race that he was curious about the tactics today. "They were interesting to me today. The other riders in the lead group were more interested in looking at me and less interested in controlling Iban Mayo, who is also a rider in the race and is also a threat on GC. I don't quite understand those tactics," said a seemingly perplexed Armstrong. "Anyway, the attacks were there and it was my job to follow the attacks. At the end of the day, the others will have to be responsive to Mayo's attacks or he'll pass them."

But on the road to l'Alpe d'Huez, it was clear that other riders were going to attack the American, including last year's Tour runner-up Joseba Beloki (ONCE-Eroski). When he attacked with nine kilometres to go, Armstrong "honestly thought that Roberto [Heras] could control Beloki's move at 10 or 15 seconds and we could bring him back gradually. Then Johan said on the radio 'you'd better go if you want to go' because I think he saw that Roberto was a little bit on the limit. So I had to go across [to Beloki] and you always pay a little bit for those efforts."
Pay he did, as the American clearly suffered today. "I'm not as strong as other years, but I've felt like that from the beginning of the Tour. Every day at the Tour is different and the race is long. I had some issues at the start of the race [an intestinal virus] that weren't ideal for coming into the Tour. If you had asked me a month if I was going to suffer that much on l'Alpe d'Huez, I would have said 'no way', so let's hope that things get better and not worse."

Speaking of suffering on l'Alpe d'Huez, no one suffered more or showed their character more today than gritty New Englander Tyler Hamilton (CSC). The tough man from Marblehead had a simply incredible ride today, considering his painful cracked collarbone. "I had a rough time today," said Tyler, "especially at the base of l'Alpe d'Huez when Postal went so hard, but I knew their tactics and just kept my own pace and adjusted to the tempo. I thought that Lance wasn't at his limit today, but I was too."
His former teammate Armstrong had praise for Tyler as well, saying, "Tyler was super; he was there and for him to be in the front like that and be attacking and being a factor is impressive. I don't know many people, including myself, that would still be in this bike race with [his injury]."
Hamilton is now sixth in the Tour de France, 1'52" behind Armstrong, but the CSC rider is still taking it day by day. "When I got out of the saddle, I felt a lot of pain, like [my collar bone] was coming apart. As long as I stayed in the saddle, the pain is bearable. For tomorrow's stage, I'm kind of nervous about the [Izoard] since there is a steep part for about 2km where I'll have to get out of the saddle."

Richard Virenque started this morning in the Maillot Jaune in Sallanches, but his hard ride yesterday clearly sapped the popular Quick.Step-Davitamon rider's strength today. Thirty-fifth on today's stage 9'29" behind Armstrong, Virenque slipped to eighteenth on GC, but kept his lead in the Maillot Pois competition for Best Climber.
Virenque said, "I was really happy to have the Maillot Jaune today, but my real objective is the Maillot Pois." Virenque has won five Maillots Pois at the Tour de France and looks likely to gain his sixth in Paris.
In the race for the other categories, Aussie Baden Cooke (FDJeux.com) maintained his lead in the competition for the Maillot Vert Points jersey, while Russian Denis Menchov (iBanesto.com) is still atop the competition for the Best Young Rider's Maillot Blanc.
Spanish teams gained a morale boost today with the way they were able to put Armstrong in difficulty on stage eight. ONCE and Euskaltel will certainly try to attack Armstrong again, as will gutsy, ambitious riders like Telekom's Alex Vinokourov. Should today's stage be Lance's worst day at this year's Tour, the American is still a solid bet to conquer his fifth straight Tour title. However, if Armstrong has more bad days at the Centenary Tour, the tough Texan could be in for the fight of his life to win this year's Grande Boucle.
Stage 9 - July 14: Bourg d'Oisans-Gap, 184.5km
Monday, Monday, so good to me. Monday morning, it was all I hoped it would be. That's the song new Maillot Jaune Lance Armstrong will be singing tomorrow in Bourg d'Oisans on the way to Gap. Whoever lost time in the mountains may be looking to go on the attack on Monday's stage nine and with the two long climbs up Lautaret and Izoard, an early attack might work on the way across the southern Alpine hinterlands on the road to Gap.
Whichever of Armstrong's rivals sense they can put Big Tex on the ropes will give it a shot, but with four years of experience behind them, USPS-Berry Floor will likely keep a lid on things.
