90th Tour de France - July 5-27, 2003Main Page Live report Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - Wednesday, July 9: Joinville - Saint-Dizier, TTT, 69 kmUSPS powers to decisive TTT win
Peña first Colombian to wear Maillot JauneBy Tim Maloney, European Editor in Saint Dizier On the first day of summer heat in the 2003 Centenary Tour De France, Lance Armstrong and his USPS-Berry Floor squad blazed across the French countryside to a decisive win in Stage 4's team time test. It was a long sought after win for Lance & Co., not just for the four years since Armstrong has dominated the Tour De France. In fact, Lance has wanted this team win for almost a decade. Today, he and his eight teammates got their first ever team time trial victory and as an added bonus, Colombian Victor Hugo Peña, Armstrong's loyal teammate from Bogota (who lives in Piedecuesta), became the first ever rider to wear the Maillot Jaune from the bicycle mad nation of Colombia. Tomorrow it's Peña's 29th birthday and he'll be awarded his weight in Champagne and then take the start wearing the golden tunic of Tour De France leadership. Just 1" behind Peña in second on GC is none other than four time TDF champ Lance Armstrong, who couldn't be sitting prettier with two more long stages to go until Saturday's first mountain stage to Morzine. An exuberant Armstrong told Cyclingnews after the USPS-Berry Floor squad's superb victory today that "I remember back in '94 when Motorola lost the TTT in Calais by like 3" to MG. This (TTT) was always Och's (former Motorola team director Jim Ochowicz) event, his passion...Och always wanted to win it, even though Motorola was never the best team on paper. So it's really good to finally win a stage like this. The desire to win carried over to (USPS-Berry Floor)...so I'm sending this one out to Och." Today, USPS-Berry Floor had a tremendous team effort, led by Armstrong and particularly his former Motorola and present USPS teammate George Hincapie. After a spring sickness that caused him to miss his main objective, the spring classics, Hincapie was back big time today on Stage 4. "George had tremendous legs today...he was unbelievably strong," team director Dirk DeMol told Cyclingnews. Hincapie, the delighted two time US champ confirmed his ride for CN today, saying "It was a fantastic day today...I've waited four years for this one! I had amazing legs today...I was recovering so fast after I hit the front." "Amazing" was the word from USPS-Berry Floor team director Johan Bruyneel, who once again masterminded a magnificent victory for the Postal Boys. "Today, we can finally claim the team prize," Bruyneel told Cyclingnews' Chris Henry. "This is fabulous - today I was really impressed with the way the guys rode the final 20km. We were 6 seconds down at 44km time check and I think we won by 30". We studied the course very well before the race and talked about it last night and again this morning", explained Bruyneel. "Everybody did a great job today, even our climbers Heras and Beltran, who normally are not so good, but they did their job." Speaking about the tactics going forward, Bruyneel didn't elaborate whether USPS-Berry Floor would defend Peña's jersey, but he did paint a picture for the competition. "Today's win is the best thing that could happen to us - for the team's motivation. I think (our win) sends a message." Today's TTT win certainly sent a message to Gilberto Simoni and his Saeco squad, who finished a disappointing 17th out of 22 teams. Giro d'Italia winner Simoni's team didn't have a great day, so Gibo is now sitting in 106th on GC, 3'08" behind Armstrong. Simoni must now go on the attack in the Alps if he hopes to regain lost time from the team time test. The TTT shakeout has made the pecking order in the Tour De France barnyard much clearer. Both Joseba Beloki (ONCE) and Jan Ullrich (Bianchi) have plenty of experience on the Tour De France podium and after their teams finished respectively second and third today, both the Spaniard and the German look to be potential candidates for the Tour podium once again. Beloki and his ONCE men are determined to make life difficult for Armstrong is possible, while Ullrich has a superb Tour track record. If Bianchi's Angel Casero, a former Vuelta winner and the rest of Jan's team have what it takes to challenge USPS, there could be some interesting moments to come In the Tour De France. iBanesto.com had a super day today and has positioned team GC leader Francesco Mancebo in a good position going forward in this year's TDF. Young Michael Rogers of Quick.Step-Davitamon looks like he is the Belgian-Italian formation's best bet for GC after Quick.Step finished fifth. Same rules apply for Telekom, since the German formation was 6th today. Santi Botero and Alex Vinokourov are less than 2'00 behind Armstrong. Tyler Hamilton and CSC had a respectable day today, as the courageous man from Marblehead continues with a cracked collarbone. Despite the pain, Hamilton was one of the main motors for CSC today. The American will reportedly start Stage 5 tomorrow and have more x-rays in Nevers to ascertain the condition of his cracked collarbone. David Millar (Cofidis) continues to remain on the fringes of the 2003 Tour. His Cofidis team was only 14th today and the Scot was less than pleased about how well his team rode today. With Simoni well behind on GC, Stefano Garzelli (Vini Caldirola-So.Di) has emerged as a dark horse at this year's Tour. After his team's surprising performance in the TTT, Garzelli is well positioned to finish in the Tour's top 10. Second in the Giro, Garzelli is a class rider and at 2'02" behind Armstrong, he just has to follow the right wheels in the right moment to make his mark. Italian Ivan Basso and Spaniard Aitor Gonzalez are Fassa Bortolo's double dip of trouble in this year's Tour. If Gonzalez ever comes into the same form that won him the Vuelta last year, he could do well. Ditto for the 2002 TDF's Best Young Rider Ivan Basso, but it's still a long way to Paris from St.Dizier. Third in the 2002 Giro d'Italia, Alessio's Pietro Caucchioli remains an unknown commodity for TDF GC. As Victor Hugo Peña chatted on the phone with the Colombian President Alvaro Uribe this evening, the sun sunk in the west and bathed the USPS-Berry Floor hotel in St. Dizier in the golden rays of the setting sun. With a team stage win under their belt and control of the 2003 Tour De France's race leadership, for here on in, it will be difficult to wrest the Maillot Jaune from USPS-Berry Floor going forward in the Centenary Tour De France. Stage 5 - July 10: Troyes-Nevers, 196 kmFrom the city of Troyes, hometown of France's cycling Simon brothers, this transitional stage traverses the quiet farm roads of Yonne and Nievre to arrive in Nevers, home of bike makers Look and Time. Weather is still forecast to be warm, sunny and dry in the upper 20's. PhotographyImages by Chris Henry/Cyclingnews.com
