A pleasant surprise at the bottom of the box was this pair of unusual socks. I will admit, at first I thought these were arm warmers until I took them out of the plastic, and then I was a little unsure if I would like these very long socks. Regardless, these are unique looking socks. This is due in part to the use of X-Static® -- a material that uses silver to increase the antimicrobial qualities of the fabric. In short, this is supposed to reduce the odor that cycling socks (seemingly more than average socks) seem to produce. Silver is also supposed to have better thermodynamic qualities that will aid in maintaining better temperatures for your feet.

The majority of fabric is polypropylene and mesh, and the quite unique construction of the socks provide multiple benefits. First off, they are way comfortable! Starting at the toes, the toe box is made from a durable and warm thickness of fabric, but not so thick as to cause tightness in my cycling shoes. There are five seams running lengthwise along the top and bottom of the foot, and two horizontally that provide a separate instep strap of thinner material for breathability. The thickness increases in the important heel cup for durability.

Above the ankle the sock extends almost to the base of the knee. Not the most masculine look, but then again, what about cycling clothes is? About two-thirds of the upper is made from the thinnest material in the sock, giving the most breathability. However, the front-facing third is a little thicker -- the same as the instep material, aiding the wind-stopping ability for the front shin. This is a very nice attribute. Additionally, when I wore these socks with the two bib tights reviewed above, the material filled-in the gaps that I found beneath the knees. Double bonus!

The price of these socks is up there, but you do get a lot of material for your dollar. And, you probably will not need to buy more than one or two pair for the coldest of cold days.
