Gilberto Simoni's 2005 Lampre-Cafitta Cannondale Six13

It took a keen eye to observe that Gilberto Simoni's Cannondale Six13 was slightly different from the rest. Okay, his Fi'zi:k Arione Carbon was unlike that of any of his teammates. Lampre-Cafitta head mechanic Giancarlo Cambié told Cyclingnews that the Southern Cross-styled saddle was especially made for his first trip Down Under, but without getting too picky, Giancarlo, it is missing one or two stars... Also different was his choice of bars, opting for FSA's Plasma one piece bar and stem, which Cambié says is "solo per Simoni" (only for Simoni). When asked why he prefers such a set-up, Cambié replied with a smile and shrugged his shoulders: "Non lo so!" (I don't know!) But what really grabbed our attention was the frame. It's Cannondale new Six13 for 2005. The yet to be released 'Dale no longer uses a carbon seat tube, although the front triangle is largely unchanged, still using carbon top and down tubes. The reversion back to an all-aluminium rear triangle has presumably been done to save weight, as the rear end can now be manufactured in one piece without lugs. But with the company carrying on with the 'Legalise my Cannondale' campaign at the 2003 Giro and Tour de France, and a frame weighing no more than 1000 grams, one wonders if this steed will indeed pass the UCI weight limit of 6.8 kilograms without the need for additional weights, like a heavier set of wheels. Giancarlo also points out that the team's two superstars, Simoni and Damiano 'Kid' Cunego, both receive custom-made geometry on their Six13s, whereas the rest of the Lampre-Cafitta boys get the same bikes mere mortals such as ourselves can get in bike stores. Other interesting tidbits include Gibo's choice of crank length - 175mm; a little unusual for the mountain man from Trentino - and pedals, where Signore Simoni still dances on Time's Impact paddles, not the recently-released RXS carbon model.
