Giro Atmos & MonzaTested and developed over the last year by Lance Armstrong and US Postal, the Atmos is finally available to us mere mortals. Described by Giro's Eric Richter as "our most advanced cycling helmet ever" the Atmos has a carbon fiber reinforcement that allows Giro to reduce the weight and improve ventilation over Giro's previous top-line helmet, the Pneumo. The Atmos is the result of over 400 prototypes, according to Richter, with a further 175 protos and samples being used by Armstrong and Giro's other Division I riders before the helmet went into production. Richter describes as Giro's "holy grail" the aim of creating a helmet that even the Tour's climbers would want to wear, and that's whatthe company set out to do with the Atmos. Claimed weight is 270g (our sample is actually slightly lighter than that); there are 26 vents and Giro's Roc Loc 4 occipital cradle to keep the helmet snug on your head. Also new from Giro is the Monza, a less spendy helmet aimed at enthusiast-level road cyclists. The 24-vent Monza boasts Giro's In-mold shell that fuses the outer polycarbonate lining to the polystyrene foam body of the helmet for reduced weight and bulk, and Giro's Roc Loc 3 occipital cradle. Specialized Carbon Comp women's shoe
Specialized believes it's scored with its new Carbon Comp women's shoe: a road shoe with a carbon/glass fiber sole built on a women-specific last. Women's feet are generally narrower than men's, especially around the heel, and tend to be smaller around the forefoot, so the Carbon Comp Women's addresses these needs. The upper is made from MicroMatric synthetic leather with a three-trap closure and there's a sock liner round the ankle for a snug fit. The Carbon Comp women's is available in sizes 36-42 and is compatible with SPD, SPD-SL, Look and Speedplay pedals. Price: $150 More info: www.specialized.com
Park Tool IB-1 & IB-2Park Tool has two new folding multi-tools for those little jobs that need doing out on the road. Both the IB-1 and IB-2 have a central aluminium spine that carries a range of bits. The IB-1 is likely to appeal to road cyclists with its set of essential tools: 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm hex keys plus a flat-blade screwdriver. The IB-2 adds three sizes of hex key (1.5mm, 2mm and 2.5mm) and a T25 Torx, the size commonly used to mount rotors in mountain bike disk brakes. More info: www.parktool.com
