Team TIAA-CREF - 2005

Team Journal Entry - March 15, 2005, by Craig Lewis

The season's first win

TIAA-CREF's Craig Lewis was hit by a car in last year's Tour de Georgia, sustaining multiple broken bones andd other injuries. As he wrote in his last diary, rehab has been tough, but it looks like it's paying off.

I had a great weekend of training at the Greenville Training Series considering that I had food poisoning a few days before. On Saturday I decided to do the Master's race before the cat 1/2 race to get in some extra racing miles. I tried to just sit in on that one, but it was still hard since the wind was gusting up to 50mph! So when the 1/2 race rolled around I was a little tired, I still tried to make the best of it. I saw the early break roll away, and I knew I needed to be in it, so I bridged the 40 sec gap. I had to go across in the head and cross winds so that made it really difficult. I never recovered from that, and I ended up 6th on the day. I didn't get the win but I did get over 100 miles of racing!

On Sunday we had a circuit race. It was still really windy, so it was going to be another tough day. I decided to go about five minutes into the race and took two of my old teammates on Hincapie-Bianchi with me. We got a nice gap right away, and with only Justin England (Health Net-Maxxis) and a few others chasing, we were able to hold the gap till the finish. It seemed like we were out there forever, but when we came around the last corner and I took the sprint it was all worth it! It is nice to already have the first win out of the way, and I was really happy to get to do that in front of my family.
