Belmont Road RaceMay 12, 2002The annual cycle road race organised by Clevedon and District Road Club took place on Sunday, May 12, over a 55 mile course near Nailsea, which included six climbs of Belmont Hill. With a high calibre field representing clubs from all over the south of England the action soon began. After the first climb of Belmont hill two riders built up a lead of more than a minute, before being closed down by the chasing pack at the mid-way point in the race. A crash during the third climb resulted in several riders having to abandon the race, including local rider, and the race favourite, Ben Luckwell. On the fourth lap a counter attack by several riders resulted in a breakaway group of five, building up a lead on the rest of the field of 30 seconds until they were caught by seven more riders on the outskirts of Nailsea. This bunch of riders began the final ascent of Belmont hill together until the last 300 yards when James Dobbin (Bath University) launched a final attack to narrowly beat Nigel Polkinghorne (Team Training FX) to the finish line. This race was considered by many to be one of the most exciting for several years, with the winner completing the 55 miles in 2 hours and 10 minutes - an average speed of over 25 mph!
