Stage 4 - May 6: Downpatrick - Craigavon

Former Professional cyclist Rob Holden representing the Isle of Man came up trumps after three days of racing and four stages in the Tour of Ulster which finished up in Craigavon yesterday afternoon. Holden can thank Andy Roche his team mate for keeping a tight control on the final stage from Downpatrick. Roche was alert to all moves and virtually controlled the stage by keeping up a fast tempo on behalf of Holden. The final stage was won Eddie O'Donoghue who unleashed the familiar sprint, which left his rivals in his wake. O'Donoghue has now stretched his lead in the Cycling Ireland Ranking list.

For a second week in a row the main beneficiaries have been the visitors who have dominated proceedings here. It does look ominous now that the home brigade will find the going tough in the upcoming FBD Milk Ras which goes on the roads of Ireland on Sunday week. Plans at the moment are for a release of all competitors in the Ras in the next day or so.

Isle of Man rider Rob Holden overcame a charge by main rival Denis Easton to hold onto the yellow jersey in the Tour of Ulster, winning the event by 32 seconds. Easton was part of a 20 man breakaway which went clear shortly after the start of today's 80 mile final stage; also present were third placed Andy Roche (IOM) and fifth placed Davy Gardiner (Apollo CRT). The group gained a maximum lead of two minutes 16 seconds, making Easton leader on the road, but were recaptured before the finish in Craigavon. Holden then had to negate another dangerous move when Roche, Gardiner, Ray Clarke and 2001 Tour of Ulster winner slipped away and opened a large gap. The field eventually regrouped after Keady, resulting in a bunch sprint where Cidona Carrick's Eddie O'Donoghue edged out Aidan Crowley (Cycleways Lee Strand) and Dublin Skip's JP Hilliard.

The result meant that Holden survived a stressful day to win overall, beating Easton and Brendan Doherty (Total Cycling.com), while fourth placed Roche had the consolation of winning the Vriedestein King of the Mountains competition and also being part of the squad which won the teams classification.
