Tour of UlsterMay 4-7, 2002Stage 1 - May 4: Craigavon - LisburnBy Shane Stokes Brendan Doherty of the Total cycling.com team today won the opening stage of the Tour of Ulster, a 79 mile race from Craigavon to Lisburn. Doherty and his 6 breakaway companions went clear on the climb out of Newry and worked well together to open up a lead of a minute and a half over the chasing main field. The riders conserved most of this advantage to the finish outside the Island Civic Centre, where a speeding Doherty outpaced Rob Holden (Isle of Man) and his Total Cycling team-mate Denis Easton to take the honours. Colm Bracken (Usher IRC) led home the main field 1 minute and 5 seconds later. The race continues tomorrow with two stages; a hilly 71 mile road stage and a 3.6 mile evening time trial. By Tommy Campbell, Irish Independent, Evening Herald, Sunday Independent The Tour of Ulster was over 77 miles of undulating countryside on the first of four stages from Craigavon to Lisburn. First into the leaders jersey was the very popular Brendan Doherty from the Total Cycling.Com team. The move of the race happened on the approach to the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland, Armagh. The field was very much intact, but there were signs that the strong men of the race were attempting to split the field. Eventually the elastic snapped on the climb out of Newry, which only recently was given the status of a city. Seven made a forward move, which went up to a minute plus. At the finish in Lisburn they had reduced it to a minute. First home was Brendan Doherty. Last years overall winner, Timmy Barry was placed 11th but unfortunately his main backers in the Cidona Team did not make it to the start line. Now his defence is very much on the line. Results, 123.66 km / 76.90 milesMen 1 Brendan Doherty (Total Cycling) 3.02.14 (40.71 km/h / 25.32 mph) 2 Rob Holden (Isle Of Man) 0.01 3 Denis Easton (Total Cycling) 4 David Gardiner (Apollo C C) 0.03 5 Thomas Hogan (Earl Of Desmond) 6 Andrew Roche (Isle Of Man) 7 Paul Kane (Dave Kane N C C) 1.02 8 Colum Bracken (Irish Road Club) 1.05 9 Eddie O'Donaghue (Dan Morrissey) 10 Ross Blayney (N.I.C.F.) 11 Timmy Barry (Cidona Carrick Whls.) 12 Paul Healion (Irish Road Club) 13 David Peelo (Irish Road Club) 14 Jonathan Dempsey (Classic Walls) 15 Geoff Currie (Classic Walls) 16 Brian Nugent (Classic Walls) 17 Daire McCaughley (Apollo C C) 18 Mark Mc.Leavey (Les Jeunes CC) 19 Patrick Moriarty (Les Jeunes CC) 20 Dermot Healy (Les Jeunes CC) 21 Sean Lacey (Earl Of Desmond) 22 John Dempsey (Earl Of Desmond) 23 Kieran McMahon (Earl Of Desmond) 24 Laurent Dumaolin (Cork) 25 Brian Lynch (Cork) 26 Keelon O'Connor (Cork) 27 Stephen Gallagher (U C F U23) 28 Stephen Hanna (U C F U23) 29 Rodger Aiken (U C F U23) 30 Sean Bracken (Irish Road Club B) 31 Michael Storen (Limerick C C) 32 Brendan Graham (Total Cycling) 33 Andrew Donellon (Dublin Whls) 34 Ken Norgrove (Dublin Whls) 35 Ciaran Kelly (Dublin Whls) 36 Brian Taaffe (Dublin Whls) 37 Donal Byrne (Dublin Whls) 38 Chris Clark (Wil-Lec Panoramric) 39 Vincent Gleeson (West Clare CC) 40 Willie Byrne (Hillcrest Hire) 41 Sean Farrell (Hillcrest Hire) 42 Graeme Hatcher (Isle Of Man) 43 Frank O'Leary (Irish Road Club B) 44 John Peppard (Mc.Nally Swords) 45 Adrian Hedderman (Cycleways) 46 Raymond Clarke (Cycleways) 47 Joe Fenlon (Dan Morrissey) 48 Michael Mulcahy (Dan Morrissey) 49 Shane Prendergast (Naas Fig Roll) 50 Stephen O'Sullivan (Naas Fig Roll) 51 Wayne Morrow (N.I.C.F.) 52 Ryan Connor (N.I.C.F.) 53 Ben Morrow (N.I.C.F.) 54 Alastair Martin (Ards C C) 55 Kirk Sloan (Ards C C) 56 Robert Moore (M.Donnelly Stamullen) 57 Tom Hughes (M.Donnelly Stamullen) 58 Paul Bloomer (Harps CC Cookstown) 59 Martin Maguire (BH Raleigh) 60 Mark Power (Cidona Carrick Whls.) 4.41 61 David Lane (U C D) 62 Greg Swinard (Irish Road Club) 63 Gary Cranston (Dave Kane N C C) 64 Brian Stewart (Dave Kane N C C) 65 John Paul Hilliard (Les Jeunes CC) 66 Paul Duignan (Total Cycling) 67 James Mc.Connell (King Moss CC) 68 Emmet Roche (Navan Avonmore) 69 David Byrne (Irish Road Club B) 70 Aiden Yates (Irish Road Club B) 71 Aidan Crowley (Cycleways 'B') 72 Tim Walsh (N.I.C.F.) 73 Pete Sharkey (M.Donnelly Stamullen) 74 Craig Sweetman (M.Donnelly Stamullen) 75 Laurence Roche (BH Raleigh) 76 Chris Tierney (Ballymena Scott RC) 77 David Elson (BH Raleigh) 7.46 78 Ryan Hamilton (Maryland Whls) 79 Gary Sheehan (Limerick C C) 9.46 80 Christopher Brown (Orchard Whls) 81 Andy Portess (Wil-Lec Panoramic) 82 Stephen Jackson (Glasgow Alpine Bike) 83 Tony Brabazon (Sorrento CC) 14.36 84 Cearon Kelly (Irish Road Club B) 85 Lennie Kirk (Ards C C) 18.54 86 Tony Mc.Conville (Apollo C C) 25.56 87 Andrew Cook (Isle Of Man) 88 Niall Quinlan (Cycleways 'B') 89 Simon Devlin (Classic Walls) 27.32 90 Sean Wright (East Antrim C C) 28.19 91 Paul Ferguson (Toyota N.D.) 92 Alan Lane (U C D) 31.25 93 Jim Maguire (Staggs Lucan) 94 Jamie Ward (Wil-Lec Panoramic) 95 Shane Connaughton (Cycleways) 96 Justin McGee (BH Raleigh) 33.48 97 Tony Hare (Apollo C C) 46.09 98 Francis Ennis (Staggs Lucan) 99 Colin Armstrong (Orchard Whls) 100 Colm Farrell (Navan Avonmore) 101 Dave Smyth (Naas Fig Roll) 102 Finton McCormack (Newbridge CC) 103 Jonathan Malone (Newbridge CC) 104 Adam Mitchell (Wil-Lec Panoramic) 52.46 Senior 2 1 T Barry 3.03.19 2 P Healion 3 J Dempsey 4 K McMahon 5 S Hanna 6 A Donellon 7 C Kelly 8 V Gleeson 9 W Byrne 10 S Farrell 11 J Peppard 12 R Clarke 13 B Morrow 14 K Sloan 15 R Moore 16 M Power 3.36 17 G Swinard 18 G Cranston 19 B Stewart 20 J Mc.Connell 21 C Sweetman 22 L Roche 23 C Tierney 24 D Elson 6.41 25 R Hamilton 26 T Brabazon 13.31 27 L Kirk 17.49 28 T Mc.Conville 24.54 29 S Devlin 26.27 30 P Ferguson 27.14 31 J Ward 30.20 32 J McGee 32.43 Club Classification 1 Total Cycling 9.07.48 2 Isle Of Man 0.03 3 Earl Of Desmond 1.07 4 Irish Road Club 2.09 5 Dan Morrissey 6 Classic Walls 7 Dublin Whls 8 Les Jeunes CC 9 Irish Road Club B 5.45 10 M.Donnelly Stamullen 11 Dave Kane N C C 9.18 12 BH Raleigh 12.26 13 Ards C C 19.58 14 Cycleways 32.29 15 Naas Fig Roll 47.13 16 Wil-Lec Panoramic 1.32.51 Mountains Competition A Roche 12 D Easton 10 D Peelo 6 T Hogan 6 K McMahon 5 G Swinard 5 B Doherty 5 J Dempsey 4 R Holden 4 D Gardiner 3 R Clarke 3 F O'Leary 2
