British national 50-mile time trial championships

Substantial margins for Hutchinson and Ashbridge

Michael Hutchinson (Team MDT-Giant) completed a hat-trick of wins when he won the Road Time Trials Council national 50-mile time trial championship near Cirencester. Hutchinson's winning 1-44-10 left him with a 2-52 lead over second placed Kevin Dawson (Compensation Group RT) while Matt Bottrill (Race Scene CC) rode to third, 6-33 behind the flying Hutchinson.

Hutchinson, already the champion in 2000 and 2001, took an early lead when he covered the first 25 miles in 53-27, to Dawson's 55-49 and Bottrill's 56-44.

Fourth place went to former Tour de France time trial stage winner Sean Yates with a time of 1-51-08.

Former Cambridge University student Hutchinson rides the Commonwealth Games time trial and individual pursuit for Northern Ireland.

In the women's event Sally Ashbridge (SCU RT) had an equally decisive win, taking 2-00-12 to cover the course. Defending champion Julie Hooper (Cwmcarn Paragon) was 7-13 slower in second place while Liz Milne (GS Strada), also dropping a place after finishing runner-up last year, was 10-47 off of Ashbridge's pace after going off course for some miles.

Both Ashbridge and Hooper were hoping their performances would clinch their places in their respective national teams, Scotland and Wales, for the Commonwealth Games.
