Stage 1 - September 28: Road Race, 123 km

Trans Tasman battle

By Alan Messenger

A strong Australian contingent dominated todayís (Saturday) tough 123 kilometre stage of the New Zealand Junior Tour at Wanganui, but two Kiwis still hold the overall lead. Overnight leader Aucklander Michael Frankovich finished just behind the bunch today, and still holds a three second lead over New Zealand Track Champion Peter Latham, with the Aussies lined up in the next four placings.

Seventeen year old Sam Lee has only been in the sport for a year, but the Sydney first year junior won the stage from Latham with a five second gap to Aucklander Troy Klink. The former Triathlete said that it was his first major win. "I just happened to be in the right place at the right time," said a jubilant Lee.

For three riders the stage brought heartbreak. Australian Dane Cheers, last yearís winner Tim Gudsell and Scott Lyttle broke away from the field after only five kilometres. Their lead see-sawed between two and three and a half minutes, and even with ten kilometres to go they appeared to have the race under control.

However with ten kilometres remaining, Lyttle dropped away, and with five kilometres to go, Cheers and Gudsell's time was up. "It was disappointing that we were caught so close to the finish but at least I picked up a lot of points along the way. Iím just stoked at the way we rode," the South Australian said.

Stages 2 and 3 - September 28: Road Race, 60 km

Lee glees with delight

By Alan Messenger

Seventeen year old Sydney cyclist Sam Lee was probably one of the least experienced riders in the field in the New Zealand Junior Tour held at Wanganui over the past three days but not only did he win the prestigious event, but he became only the second first year junior to win in itís 22 year history.

The other rider with that distinction, last yearís winner Tim Gudsell could only manage ninth place this year. Lee, the former triathlete with only one year's cycling experience behind him won the first stage on Saturday, then took over the leader's jersey on Sunday morning when he finished second in a four man breakaway on the penultimate stage this morning.

Lee finished fourth in a tough final stage to finish with a ten second overall advantage over teammate Dane Cheers from South Australia. The early leader Michael Frankovich fought back well to finish third.

The winner, as usual thanked his teammates but in this instance it was especially true. The six man Australian team worked the race to perfection, whereas none of the young Kiwis appeared to have yet learned anything about team riding.
