54th Trofeo Piva

Col San Martino, April 7, 2002

Report by Brian Stephens, Australian Institute of Sport

On Sunday the AIS Mapei Aqua team rode an Under 23 World Cup race at Col San Martino in Northern Italy. The course consisted of 3 laps of a flat circuit of 14.4km followed by 6 laps of a very tough 18.9km circuit making 155km. Jeremy Yates got onto the offensive from soon after the start and was joined by 2 others to set up an advantage of just over a minute at the 1st climb. He rode away from his companions on the climb but then took a wrong turn and was left well behind the chasing bunch by the time he rejoined the circuit. The field was reduced each time they traversed the testing but surprisingly the finish was decided by a 35 man sprint, won by Mirko Lorenzetto from team Marchiol Hit. Our best was consistent new rider to the program, Dave McPartland finishing 29th.
