53rd Milano - BussetoLombardia, March 29, 2003By Brian Stephens, AIS On Saturday the AIS Mapei Aqua Australian team raced a 132km race near Parma called Milano - Busseto. I guess that at some time in the race's 55 year history, it started in Milan but now it starts and finishes in Busseto and goes nowhere near Milan. Our team consisted of David Betts, Peter Dawson, Aaron Kemps, Bernard Sulzberger, Brendan Cato, and Lee Godfrey. The first 40 kilometres of the race was dead flat and raced at fairly high speed. At about the 10km mark, a group of 15 riders went clear with Peter Dawson representing us. The break never got more than about a minute and a half away from the main bunch with the front group losing riders and some getting across. Peter was there until the last climb where he suffered from cramps and lost contact, leaving 11 in the front group. Peter was picked up by the second group which also contained David Betts and Brendan Cato, for the flat run into the finish. They got close but couldn't reel in the front group by the time they reached the finish in Busseto. The race was won in fine style by Claudio Corioni from Unidelta, who jumped away from the front group to win alone. Peter won the intermediate sprint prize.
