GP Artigiani, Sediai e MobilieriTurin, March 23, 2003By Brian Stephens, Australian U23 Team Manager Last Sunday the AIS Mapei Aqua team raced the GP Artigiani, Sediai e Mobilieri near Turin. The race consisted of five laps of a fairly flat circuit, followed by another four of a tough circuit with three solid climbs per lap, followed by another small flattish lap before the finish. We went there with only four riders as Gene Bates was out with a broken collar bone and another three riders were at the Mexico World Cup track event before coming to Italy. The real action began when the field hit the second circuit where it started to disintegrate. The field was whittled down to about 40 riders coming to the last of the four tough laps. Lee Godfrey payed for some early aggression when he lost contact on the early on this lap. The other three - Bernard Sulzberger, Brendan Cato and Dave Betts - all rode strongly but were unable to go with the winning break that split off the front on this lap. Brendan came in with the next group to run 15th while the others led home the main group in to run 18th an 19th. The race was won by Slovenian rider, Borut Bozic, riding for the Luxembourg based Sidi Koptal team.
