GP RisoSeptember 24, 2002Report from Brian Stephens, Australian Institute of Sport Yesterday the AIS Mapei Aqua team raced the GP Riso in the region in which we live in Italy. The guys were obviously a little flat with only 1 day between the 5 day GP Tell, and this 150km circuit race but as the course and, as it turned out, the weather conditions, were similar to what we expect at the World Championships and so was worth the effort of racing. A strong field of over 180 riders faced the starter in wet and cold conditions and the pace was on from the gun. After 4 laps of the 10km circuit a strong group of 14 formed the front group, including 3 from the Italian national team. Trevigiani Mapei tried hard to close it down but could make little impression until the Australians joined them in the chase and the gap was eventually closed down. About 120 riders sprinted for the finish with Italian National team sprinter, Francesco Chichi taking the win. Gene Bates and David Pell both contested the wild finish but could not get clear run and both ran in the 20s. Results1 Francesco Chichi (Ita) Italian National team |
