Milano - Rapallo

Sunday saw the running of the Milano - Rapallo, Elite / Under 23 race of 206km from the centre of Milan to the beautiful Mediterranean town of Rapallo. The course took the riders over about 50km of climbing over the range and then after dropping to the coast, turned to climb 2 final steep climbs within 10km of the finish. The race was quite slow for the first half with intermittent periods of high pace. By the time the riders hit the coast the front group still had about 150 riders fighting for position on the final climbs. A group of 15 got clear and sprinted for the finish. Simon Gerrans had some consolation for last week's disappointment, just being beaten by half a wheel by Byelorussian, Allaksandr Kuchynski riding for Grassi Mapei. Gene Bates was one of the animators of the attacks on the climbs and came in 10th.
