Astico Brenta - 1.12Vittoria Venento, Italy, September 8, 2002by Brian Stephens Last Sunday saw the running of the Astico Brenta in Vittoria Venento. It turned out to be a day of frustration and confusion after a late alteration of the race-course. The course started in Rossano Veneto and made a 170 km loop, taking in a 15km climb before returning to Rossano Veneto where the confusion starts. In the managers meeting before the race it was explained that the race would cross the finish line and there would be 1 lap of 4.6km to the finish. When front group, including Australians Simon Gerrans and Peter Dawson hit the finish line they were given the 2 laps to go sign. They turned to the race director's car following them to ask about the change and were told that the finish was the next time through as originally planned. They sprinted for the finish with Simon Gerrans being narrowly beaten and Dawson running 7th but were given 1 lap to go. Some riders stopped and others kept going and the race was awarded to the riders who completed the extra lap.
