Former World Champion Stahurskaya takes weekend double

After a decisive victory in Friuli on Saturday, 2000 World Road Champion Zinaida Stahurskaya completed a decisive double over the weekend, taking her second win in Sala Baganza today.
The circuit was located just south of Parma, and only 50km from the A.I.S. Australian base in Italy, with 4.2km each lap, a steep pinch at the finish, and a longer, shallower climb at the back of the circuit that was had many of the riders in difficulty early with the constant aggression.
The race completed 20 laps, with the A.I.S. Australian team dominant throughout the race, constantly attacking, and finally reducing the field to 29 finishers from 71 starters. All of the Aussies were in moves and it was down to former world champion Zinaida Stahurskaya making the decisive move at 2 laps to go, with Australian Olivia Gollan taking the opportunity to get clear.
Stahurskaya kept the pressure on, with the chasing group hovering at 30 secs., leaving Gollan behind at 1km to go. Both riders held onto 1st and 2nd comfortably, with consistent finisher Alison Wright taking out the bunch sprint, at around 30 secs. in arrears.
A memorable day all round for the Aussies, when within 10 mins. of the women's race finish, the locals were all focused on the television for the live T.V. finish of stage 1 of the Giro, with Graeme Brown and Robbie McEwen taking 2nd and 3rd respectively.
