4th Trofeo Riviera della VersiliaMassarossa, June 1, 2002 ItalyReport by Liz Hepple, Acting Australian Team manager Traditionally a very hard race, the 2002 version of this Italian National Series race was no different. With a starting field of 120 including many former world champions and winners of major tours and a course that included four hard climbs, the riders knew that they would be in for a tough day. Many riders went off the back on the first major climb, but it was the attacks on the tricky descents and flatter sections of the course that proved decisive. Itera's Vera Carrara and local champion Sara Felloni broke away before the halfway mark, then held on until the finish despite some serious efforts to reel them back in. A.I.S. Australian cyclist Oenone Wood, who recently had to retire from the Tour de l'Aude with a throat infection, showed she had made great progress in her first season in Europe. She escaped in a small break which included fellow Australian Katie Mactier. These women were later joined by four other riders, including multiple junior world champion Nicole Cooke and former world champions Zinaida Stahurskaia and Edith Pucinskaite. They finished around two minutes clear of the chasing group which included AIS Australian rider Emma James and fellow Australian Kym Shirley (team Itera). Olivia Gollan was still feeling the effects of her great effort in the recent Tour de l'Aude, and finished in the next bunch, closely followed by what was left of the main bunch, including Amy Safe in her first ever European race. Naomi Williams retired at the 70kms mark, to rest an injured leg, and Lorian Graham crashed at the 70kms mark, sustaining a hairline fracture to her arm.
