Memorial Danilo FurlanCaerano San Marco, Veneto, April 21, 2002Visiting Aussies just miss the breakBy Brian Stephens, AIS The AIS Mapei Aqua team had one of their best performances as a team this year but without gaining an impressive result in the Memorial Furlan in Caerano San Marco, Veneto. The course consisted of 16 laps of a 7.5km circuit with a solid climb each lap, followed by a 30km lap highlighted by the famous Mostacin climb with its summit only 6km from the finish, to give a total of 150km. David Pell contributed with an big effort to close down a 10 man break with a minute gap at about the halfway mark, opening the way for Jeremy Yates and Daniel Mackey to join a six-man break. When Daniel cracked and was dropped, he was replaced by Dave McPartland. This break was eventually reeled in and Adrian Laidler went the next one. When this one was also caught the guys worked hard to keep Gene Bates in good position to tackle the decisive climb. He just failed to cross with the lead group of 10 and followed them in on his own, 30 seconds in arrears. The rest of the guys came in with the next few bunches but I only have the official result of the leaders.
